Infowars analysis: In addition to under reporting the fires at Fukushima, the Japanese government has not told the people about the ominous fact that the nuclear plant site is a hellish repository where a staggering number of spent fuel rods have accumulated for 40 years.

A contributor to the Occupational and Environmental Medicine list who once worked on nuclear waste issues provided additional information about Fukushima’s spent fuel rod assemblies, according to a post on the FDL website.

“NIRS has a Nov 2010 powerpoint from Tokyo Electric Power Company (in english) detailing the modes and quantities of spent fuel stored at the Fukushima Daiichi plant where containment buildings #1 and #3 have exploded,” he wrote on March 14.

The Powerpoint is entitled Integrity Inspection of Dry Storage Casks and Spent Fuels at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station and can be read in full here. The document adds a new and frightening dimension to the unfolding disaster.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant has seven pools dedicated to spent fuel rods. These are located at the top of six reactor buildings – or were until explosions and fires ravaged the plant. On the ground level there is a common pool in a separate building that was critical damaged by the tsunami. Each reactor building pool holds 3,450 fuel rod assemblies and the common pool holds 6,291 fuel rod assemblies. Each assembly holds sixty-three fuel rods. In short, the Fukushima Daiichi plant contains over 600,000 spent fuel rods – a massive amount of radiation that will soon be released into the atmosphere.
 
I read a great article by MIT nuclear engineer yesterday. Here's the basis of it.
The spent nuke fuel rods are stored above the reactor. If they can not keep them covered in water they will spontaneously combust and catch fire and explode spewing radiation all over the place.
That is the war they are waging trying to restore water flow to the spent fuels and reactors. They tried to resort to dumping water by helicopter. That reeks of desperation.
The earthquake damaged their ability to keep the spent fuel rods and reactors cooled with water. They've lost power water flow etc.
Not a good situation. Having to contain multiple reactors.
 
The situation is much worse than reported, imo. The reactor buildings literally blew sky high and damaged the containment vessels. So whatever was in the building - namely, the spent fuel rod pools - got blown to shit, too... Now it makes sense why the GoJ planned a water airdrop - to re-fill the pools...

And now the report is there is NO water at all in the pools. Damn!:(

[4:25 p.m. ET Wednesday, 5:25 a.m. Thursday in Tokyo] A spent fuel pool at Japan's stricken Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is dry, resulting in "extremely high" radiation levels, the head of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Wednesday.

"What we believe at this time is that there has been a hydrogen explosion in this unit due to an uncovering of the fuel in the fuel pool," Gregory Jaczko told a House energy and commerce subcommittee hearing. "We believe that secondary containment has been destroyed and there is no water in the spent fuel pool, and we believe that radiation levels are extremely high, which could possibly impact the ability to take corrective measures."

BTW, one of those roof tops has already blown up so all that material is "dustified" and in the air. Did you see that explosion from reactor #3? :eek:
 
Can anyone help me to understand something about the spent fuel rods.
They are no longer able to work as needed. So they are stored in water until they start to become cooler correct ?
If they can generate so much energy / heat, is that energy /heat tapped and also used to produce electric, or is it just left alone.
If left alone to cool down over the years, why is it the spent fuel energy not to be used?
