All my experiences with airbnb have been positive. I'm actually going to try it in Japan this week.
 
I have tried them once. the place had 17 5 star reviews.

it was so bad my wife and I left and went to a real hotel.

apparently because the host reviews the guests as well as vice versa the reviewers are afraid to give negative reviews.

Yeah you have to pay attention to the small details. Some of the bookings are scams or misrepresented.
