Obama Administration Sent Aid to Mexico to Fight Wildfires But Not Texas

The Obama Administration sent aid to Mexico to battle a 386 square mile fire but refused to consider the 2.5 million acre fire in Texas a disaster area.
KTRH reported, via Free Republic:
Just last month the U.S. sent two Air force cargo planes to help Mexico battle back wildfires in the northern part of it’s country, fires that burned 386 square miles. It’s a move that West Texas Congressman Francisco Canseco (R-Fort Stockton) thinks is a hypocritical one by the Obama administration as Texas has requested the same sort of federal aid but has been denied it.

“386 square miles pales with the 2.5 million acres of land that have been burned and scorched beyond recognition,” says Canseco.

And Former FEMA Director Michael Brown thinks that a “snub” like this reeks of politics as he believes Texas deserves a similar response from the federal government.

“I think what’s going on is we see the Chicago style politics. I’m amazed that he’s put FEMA in this awkward position of not allowing federal assistance,” says Brown.

These claims by Perry and others are at best misleading. FEMA is providing Tx with lots of grants, equal to what Perry asked for.

Perry did not need to ask Obama as FEMA had the authority to grant Perry's requests and did so.

""This administration, through FEMA, has been working closely with the state throughout the duration of these fires, and we are supporting the firefighting efforts," said Rachel Racusen, FEMA's director of public affairs. "In fact, we have approved 25 fire management assistance grants to help cover expenses for these emergency response efforts.

"Each of these grants covers 75 percent of the costs to fight the fire and many of the same emergency response needs that Gov. Perry was seeking assistance for."

"The message [calling for prayer] was signed by Neugebauer, as well as Reps. Stevan Pearce (R-N.M.) and Spencer Bachus (R-Ala.).

All three lawmakers voted for the House FY 2011 continuing resolution, which included significant cuts to funding for the federal response to weather, climate and natural disasters (The cuts were no longer in the bill by the time it went through the Senate and was signed by the President).

For example,funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency's state and local programs was slashed $783.3 million below FY 2010 levels. The FEMA Pre-Disaster Mitigation Grant Program lost $35 million. The part of FEMA's budget for emergency food and shelter was cut $100 million, and Assistance to Firefighter Grants lost $510 million. "
