I'm envious, not only because you're in Palm Springs, but because I think if I could learn to recognize chop early I'd be a billionaire. Today was a bitch! Every time it looked like a trend was starting (e.g. two LL/LH), I entered the trade and it immediately reversed. My question is, the market seemed to be in a definite down trend first thing this morning. How did you know to stay out?

Yeah bluedemon, first of all I am no where even close to where Anek is or even Piscuy or Mark1 is. My dream someday is to be there. Maybe if I am fortunate 5 years from now !!
That being said like Anek says screen time is the key to this. Large amounts of it. There is just no getting around it !!

In the YM I saw some Uptrend in the beginning of session. But there was too many long Bars with Long wicks for me to find an entry. And the pullbacks, IMHO, were just too deep !!

Today was a difficult day to trade, aside from the morning session which was a reversal which developed into a good uptrend the remainder session was choppy as hell aside from a good downside move that was quite decent.

If you examine the complete intraday it is one big triangle so the choppy action comes as no surprise.

123 Entries supported by the Trendline and the Trend were profitable as usual so even with the chop some opportunities presented themselves.

Is this just about judgment? I have played around with ATR and other measures of volatility, but haven't found anything that helps as a chop detector. About the only thing I've found that works is when the market is making both lower lows and higher highs or higher lows and lower highs. That didn't work today either. About the only thing I could have done was try to call the top or bottom, which is even harder than detecting the chop. Of course now, with the market closed, I can see the big rectangle on the ES chart, but up until around 2 PM it wasn't very obvious.
