After hours trades of stocks...When do you use it and why...

The only situation I can think of is to lock in gains - but I see no point in doing so.
Example:
One big draw back is that you would need the margin in your account to short the shares.
Example:
- Long calls
- Stock goes up during after-hours trading and your options are now ITM.
- To lock in the gains you short 100 shares.
- During regular market hours you exercise your options.

I think its time to extend the trading day, just keep the markets open like the futures markets!!!!! 6.5 hours isn't enough anymore especially now that everything is global and trading can be done from any where anytime, it's actually quite pathetic the exchanges run only 6.5 hrs. ... extended hours is worthless, I have traded after-hours many times but it seems the spreads are just not worth it. It's 2021 not 1957 or 1974, time to extend the trading day !!!
Oh, that's brilliant. So wouldn't that require all institutions that are involved in finance be open 23/5 also? Stock brokers, banks, etc?
I kinda am against after-market hours, even though I'm all for tech. It's bad enough to have to monitor and track during they day, but now I have to do it in my sleep too? It's nice to have a weekend off also from the markets.
