The fact that the winning trades were wiped out by the loosing does surprise me. I have had moments where I cringe, but my winners have always made enough to overcome the loosers.
Though I would advise that you use this approach with contrarian, and not momentum or swing.
I agree completely that timing is everything, and definitely this strategy is contrarian (as am I, looking to counter-trend my way into the new trend whenever possible or looking for reversion to mean on over-extensions in a range).
