Since the Trump Administration announced a punitive immigration detention policy in 2018
that separated families, reports have surfaced of immigrants who have died while in detention or shortly after being released to medical facilities for treatment. It’s understandable why news consumers and suppliers are interested in deaths in detention facilities given the Trump Administration’s actions on this issue, but the distinct impression from reading all of these stories is that being detained is more dangerous than ever.
To check whether this was true or if this impression was just an artifact of cognitive bias, I decided to estimate the annual death rate in immigration detention in the United States. There are two primary pieces of data required to calculate this rate: The number of people in detention each year and the number of deaths. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) runs all of the detention facilities and they provide the number of deaths and admissions. The American Immigration Law Association provides some more recent numbers of deaths in detention, but I only include those that ICE also counts. The admissions into ICE detention facilities variable is the proper one to use as it is closer to the number of unique individuals who were present in a detention facility in each year. The numbers for both variables run through the end of Fiscal Year (FY) 2018.
The FY2018 death rate in ICE immigration detention was 2.3 per 100,000 detainees, a 39 percent drop relative to the rate for FY2017. That’s good news, but the improvement in FY2018 follows on a deterioration in FY2017 from FY2016. In FY2017, the death rate per 100,000 detainees increased by 31 percent relative to FY2016. In other words, the chance of dying in detention rose in FY2017 – but the death rate began to rise in FY2015 from a low point of 1.4 per 100,000 in FY2014 in an uninterrupted trend. The largest percentage increases during this time was a 60 percent jump from FY2014 to FY2015. The Trump Administration inherited an ICE detention system where the death rate was rising, presided over a year when the death rate continued to rise, and then saw it fall by 32 percent in FY2018.
Figure 1 shows the total number of ICE detentions and the total number of deaths in custody. The absolute number and rates of death in ICE detention were highest during the George W. Bush administration at 6.4 per 100,000 per year. Those death rates fell rapidly from 2004, the first full year when ICE was in operation, from 11.9 per 100,000 detainees to 2.9 per 100,000 detainees in 2008. The death rate rose 26 percent during the first year of the Obama Administration in 2009, then started falling again the next year with an average annual death rate of 2.3 per 100,000 detainees during his entire presidency. We only have data for two years of the Trump administration where the annual death rate is 2.9 percent – almost identical to that of the first two years of the Obama Administration.

2. I respond by asking you to share some data that says this is a Trump issue and not something that happens with all Presidents.
3. You literally pull numbers out of thin air and say no one died under Obama "Obama: 0" and "6+" died under Trump.
4. I ask for the source of this.

6. The very first link on google leads me to the Cato org that shows that, not only is Trump not the President during the highest death rate time, but he's actually one of the lowest.

Actually, I think you're doing both, though it doesn't change the fact that you provided no evidence and I did.
Your post above was in response to someone else, and may have some merit. Nevertheless the issue of infant mortality at Trump's hands is a distraction. It does though afford me an opportunity to bring up more critical issues.
The majority of those crossing our southern border without papers are seeking asylum through regular ports of entry, which they are entitled to under international law that the United States is a party to. When they present themselves at a border crossing, they are not doing so illegally!
The United States prides itself in being above inhuman treatment of detainees. That pride turned out to be unjustified when we found out the conditions under which border detainees were/are being held. That's a part of what's at issue here.
We are all in agreement that borders should not be open to all. The disagreement is how expeditiously those who come to our country seeking asylum under international law should be processed and how they should be treated while awaiting processing.
The Trump administration, under much increased pressure, broke from the standards maintained by the Obama administration. They did it to intentionally punish those seeking asylum. The simple observation that cruel and inhuman treatment of those already in detention had little affect in stemming the tide of asylum seekers, who walked hundreds of miles with little more than the clothes on their backs, should be our clue to how desperate most of the detainees are. Nevertheless, some here are insisting on remaining clueless to what is obvious to others.
Wouldn't it make more sense if, instead of dismantling the State Department, the Trump administration were to build on the Obama administration's Latin American initiatives* by offering aid to Latin American Countries, via the State Department, to help stabilize their governments and make those countries safer? Under pressure from increased numbers of asylum seekers, rather than sending more troops to Saudi Arabia, a murderous authoritarian country** that has done us no favors, wouldn't it have made more sense to offer those same resources to help Latin American Countries maintain safety and order?
You are witnessing chaos and destruction wrought by putting a sociopathic narcissist into the highest position in Government! No one is at fault for voting for Trump; other than a psychologist or psychiatrist, who could have foreseen the destruction of government agencies and chaos in international relations he would bring. However now that we have seen the result of nearly 3 years under Trump's leadership, we are at fault if we don't recognize our mistake and do something about it. When we don't speak out against Trump's atrocities and destructive actions we are siding with the Alt-Right and White Nationalists for whom Trump is a useful idiot.

*When Obama took office, U.S.Latin American Policy was in disarray and fraught with mutual distrust. Obama made significant progress in reducing distrust and forming working partnerships with the countries of Central and South America. He opened the door to Cuba as well. Some of the progress made has already been undone by the current administration.
**As I write this, both Donald Trump and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are actively seeking funding from prominent Saudis for their business operations .

He's the one who is trying to make the issue about infant mortality because he got his proverbial ass handed to him when he tried to blame Trump for the death of a teen, and then further lied about how deaths of teens in holding facilities is up under Trump - which is completely inaccurate as the data shows.
Yeah, whatever. Anyone should be able to walk across the border and demand asylum just like that. Oh and they should be entitled to full benefits and schooling to. Right. Uh huh.
