Abbott suggests Harvey recovery could cost $180 billion

You sound like that Humpy guy. Another Brit in his parent's basement with an answer to everything going on in America. If you were alive during Dunkirk or D-Day you would be shouting out alerts from your mom's basement about what should have been and should be done- taking short breaks when your mom brings you your milk and cookies.

To be fair it's the same argument the right was using during Katrina. "Why save them when they built under sea level next to the sea?" But then again, NO is mostly black so it fits their viewpoint.

No. That was just a smear that the left put on to Bush. That he botched things because he did not care about black people. It was ugly and the left loves ugly.

It was just a botched operation all the way round. The Governor was a Democrat. Kathleen Blanko, might have gotten her last name wrong. The feds did not position resources in the state because the protocol is for the federal government to respond to requests from the state rather than just go in and take over. Blanco refused to request help from the feds until much too late. I could make a good case that she did not request help because she does not care about black people but I don't believe it. She just botched it like Bush did. Mercifully she had the good sense to not even bother to run for re-election. She knows she botched it, and that the people blame her. Yes, they blame bush but they blame her too. And the dem black mayor of new orleans served a ten year sentence for corruption and profiteering included katrina related. You could make a good case that he hated blacks too by exploiting the chaos after katrina.

I'm referring to the aftermath reconstruction attitudes, not the first response inaction.

Abbott suggests Harvey recovery could cost $180 billion

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said on Sunday the nearly $8 billion requested by the White House for Hurricane Harvey relief was only a small down payment to fuel recovery efforts.

"That aid will not be [enough]," Abbott said when asked about the amount by CNN's Dana Bash on "State of the Union." "However, it is very clear, the president has made it clear, Congress is making it clear, this is just a down payment."

Instead, Abbott compared Harvey, which brought destructive winds and deadly flooding to the Texas Gulf Coast, to Hurricane Katrina.

"Let's not compare it to Sandy, let's compare it to Katrina," Abbott said. "Listen, the population size and the geographic size is far larger than Katrina and, I think, Sandy combined.

"We have over 5 million people who were affected by this. It's not just the flooding in Houston, it's the hurricane swath all the way from Corpus Christi over to Beaumont," the Republican governor said. "So, it's going to require even more than what was funded for Katrina, which was about $120 billion."

Earlier "Fox News Sunday." Abbott had predicted the cost could total as much as $180 billion.

"This will cost well over $120 billion," he said. "Probably $150 to $180 billion."

Already, the Harvey recovery is forecast to take years, Abbott said.

"When you look at the number of homes that have been mowed down and destroyed and damaged, this is going to be a huge catastrophe that people need to come to grips with," he said. "It's going to take years for us to be able to overcome this challenge."
