The problem with Texas’ electric grid is deregulation and privatization run amuck. Electric is very political in Texas there’s a whole bunch of issues swirling around the mess from opposition to “green energy” to the belief the private sector can do a better job than government. And the end result is dividends are being handed out and infrastructure is aging and not getting the upgrades it needs.

Nor is any type of reasonable government oversight and regulation being applied to the power grid in terms of winterization requirement, backup capacity, minimum maintenance requirements, or any other aspect of how power infrastructure (and companies) are regulated in most other states.

Texas under Abbott and GOP basically told the power companies "go do whatever you want" while also cutting off interconnection agreements to other states to provide backup.

You are correct. This entire situation started with the power deregulation process in Texas and the problem has been building for a couple of decades.

The problem with Abbott is that he failed to take any reasonable measures to fix it when it became obvious that it was a glaring critical issue which was killing residents in his state. It is not fair to blame Abbott for causing the power deregulation issues; it is fair criticize Abbott significantly for failing to fix the problems when they became critical.

To avoid rolling blackouts ERCOT is begging consumers to crank their thermostats to 78, and shut off any high-drain appliances and ordering Texas power generators to run flat-out, skipping routine maintenance.

But apparently not knowing how sensitive U-Tard is on this topic, the Wall Street Journal walks right into it. And no we are not talking CA past problems, as though they have gone away. Their current situation is very shaky and dangerous as I fully discussed.

But I get it. Abbott lives in Texas, and Newsome is running for dem nominee.

It's amusing that the WSJ is trying to blame the problems on "renewable energy" -- while in reality renewable energy has nothing to do with the power problems in either state. As an example, in the summer heat it is not like solar and wind power reduced their output in Texas or California (and no, "the wind did not falter in the summer heat"). Noting that the huge majority of energy in both states come from non-renewable sources (coal, gas, nuclear, etc.).

It is not an either/or.

The argument is that the newer investments have been in the green stuff which has underperformed so we increasingly work the older methods/facilities harder and harder without having upgraded or expanded them. It is a lose/lose approach.

The reality -- renewable energy is bailing out Texas in the record heat. And the renewable energy resources in Texas are putting out record amounts of energy in 2022 -- trying to compensate for the gas and coal resources which are not keeping up & are down for maintenance, etc.

Yeh. whatever. Each episode/event has its own story.

The wind and solar definitely did not bail out Texas in the infamous catastrophe with the wintertime/ice power failure did it?

People cherry pick what fits their politics. And overlook the rest.

The Europeans learned some harsh lessons by pretending that the green stuff was more ready than it was, and not surprisingly so is Texas and and other states. The wind and solar would not be bailing out the traditional sources if the the traditional sources had been allowed to expand as needed. But no, the progressives and Biden fight that type of thing tooth and nail. Just as the Europeans did. Some wake up calls currently in progress in Europe and in the U.S. as well.
