A sad day for journalism, Bill O'Reily retires

He didn't get fired for sexual harassment. Fox has known about those allegations for years. The drop of advertisers had something to do with it, but they could have held firm and rode that out if they wanted to. The real issue is the organization is being handed over to Rupert M's leftwing sons who want to do a hatchet job with the channel.

Come on, you have to think about it a little deeper, man.

Actually from a Contractual basis his new contract signed a week before his firing stated that if any new allegations arose regarding sexual harassment then he would be fired and only given one year of severance. It took under 72 hours for new allegations of sexual harassment to arise and Bill was fired under his new contract.

From the NYT article - "The contract did provide the company with some protections, including that Mr. O’Reilly could be dismissed if it was made aware of other allegations against him or if new ones arose, according to one person. The contract also included extra assurances meant to get Mr. O’Reilly to address his behavior, the person said. Mr. O’Reilly’s salary was estimated to be about $18 million.
...
Since then, other complaints have been lodged, including one on Wednesday by a current Fox News contributor who said Mr. O’Reilly had made inappropriate comments to her, urging her to show more cleavage at work."

So someone who is not an employee claims he told her to show more cleavage? Basically, so what? It's his show, if he wants women to be sexy on it, that's within his rights, isn't it?

I would be surprised if he left with only $18 mill. Ailes was reputed to have received $40 mill.

There may be a contract, but O'Reilly could always dispute the allegations. I would not be surprised if the Murdochs engineered it, just to get rid of him. In any event, they are going to want a non-compete. And probably a no-book agreement.

If you are running CNN or MSNBC and you could grab O'Reilly, you'd be crazy not to. He is guaranteed to bring his audience with him. What a dilemma for those channels, sell their soul for ratings? LOL Or watch the other guy do it and bury you.

You cite the New York Times as if they are a credible news source.

Actually you can site another 30 news sources all with the same information. The bottom line is that contractually Bill O'Reilly was fired for breaking the terms of his new contract in regards to sexual harassment.

Or does Bill go work in public relations for the Trump administration?

At least until a contract with a different network shows up. Or to get past a non-compete period.

"A sad day for journalism, Bill O'Reily retires"

A sad day for journalism? I think not! Bill O'Reilly is not a journalist, he is a talking mouth-piece spewing editorial. Very little of what he did involved any type of traditional investigation and journalism. His show was not a news show, it was entertainment.

I am sure that in time FOX will find some other entertainer to fill his time-spot who will generate even higher ratings and advertising revenue. The only thing I do know is that it won't be Tucker Carlson who steps up and exceeds the O'Reilly entertainment rating & revenue benchmarks.

Right now I hope Bill is shopping offers.

I think the best one will be he becomes the figure head and gets a piece of a new conservative network set up with ailes and bannon's friends. I will bet Beck and miller are on it too.

Beck is all over this right now. at least I hope he is.
He said the most glowing things about Oreilly on his radio show while I was a burrito line right after this allegation came out. .

So what you are saying is you think Fox News should have kept this guy and that Ailes guy on the job and you'd be 100% comfortable if your wife or daughter were direct reports to either one of them ? Might make for some interesting dinner table talk at your house.

It's a damn good thing Jem is not a Democrat. If Jem was a Democrat then he would probably give Bill Clinton a free pass for his sexual relations with his female staff. Heck, Jem would probably also give Anthony Weiner a pass for sexting underage girls. Jem would have been shunned by the other leftwing folks on this message board since they would never make excuses for Bill Clinton and Anthony Weiner and their actions against women.

O'Reilly is guilty and he has been fired. For some reason we can agree that Bill O'Reilly was wrong but we can't quite agree if Bill Clinton was wrong or not? Interesting.... In other talkshow host news Brian Williams an admitted liar on multiple counts for field journalism has a job with MSNBC and Fareed Zakaria the admitted plagiarizer still has a show on CNN.
