A PC`s lifetime

Quote from golden rule:

Question: I have a 6 year old PC (HP with AMD Athlon XP processor). I use mostly to read news and to e-mail. Should I buy a new computer for trading or this is enough for swing trade?

If you ask this kind question, you need a new computer; because you don't know how to maintain a PC, especially fans inside computer, and hard drive has life span of 5 years.

once again what we are talking about here...$200-300?...computers cost today close to nothing...you can build one for less than $200.
the other day i bought soemthing like this -
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834152067

for like $300.. looks like dual core,XP installed. added 1 more GB Ram.. now the thing is probably fast as P4.
dell is selling now desktops for $399 with 19" monitor..why wasting the time on front of old, slow PC which can fell apart any minute? if i can't afford $400 for PC-i would stay away from any type of trading

It's not about that he can't afford a new PC . It's about tinkering with gadgets . Playing actually .

i can understand that..but..i also bring this netbook example for reason..look at current pc's\laptops.they small, very powerful and way more efficient..smaller size, less heat, less electricity used, more power. i still have old p3 somewhere in closet.. works fine..but even browsing internet on this thing using latest firefox is a pain..

That is quite wrong. There is a LOT more to performance than just clock frequency.

Recent CPUs are much faster than a five year old pentium.

I'll agree to disagree, though I concede there is *some* performance improvement in the new processor architectures. I'd love a new Core 2 Duo, but I don't need the performance for what I do.

The DSP guys in my department *do* need that kind of horsepower, but not lil ole me.

and don't forget, the bus speed is much faster also.
