de Gaul pulled France out of NATO in 1965 I believe. They coordinate with NATO but are not members. Among France's other moments of glory was denying overflight rights to our long range air attack on Libya during the Reagan administration. Their action made the raid much longer and more dangerous. They apparently have cooperated and assisted in terrorist investigations however.
