I've often thought the same thing. Every county should have an employment office where you can show up at 9 am and have a job by 5 pm. It may not be much of a job. Picking up trash on the side of the highway. Cleaning graffiti off Government buildings. But nothing is more economically depressing than being unemployed.
Most conservative economists make a very good argument why "make work" programs in the long run are a failure. But it's a hell of a lot easier to get hired in the private sector if you can put on your work history "working for the government currently' instead of "unemployed for the last two years."
And you call yourself Libertarian. What a laugh!
