A funny thing happens at $15 per hour...

Its something like a zero sum game.

You mandate a minimum wage. Employers pair down staff and seek effective employees. Those shut out of the job market end up on public assistance paid not by businesses (directly) but paid by taxpayers.

All roads lead to our pockets.

See, had we done this after Obama left us with record low unemployment numbers instead of passing tax cuts we didn't need in 2017, the impact would've been lessened

And that is the crux of the issue, right there. The productivity of the employee.

You walk me into any retail establishment and I will point out to you the 90% of the workers who are lazy and picking their ass when they should be doing work. Real, actual work to better their company. Problem is, there is no work ethic left, because most work is boring and the fat cats at the top have no inclination to "incentivize" it for the worker drones, because they are rich and don't give a shit about the trenches. It's disgusting.

Raising the minimum wage is fine, if you get that extra productivity out of the worker so the raise is merited by the extra work they will do. (Which they should have been doing at the previous wage, but that is another discussion.)
You do realize that a minimum wage increase has nothing to do with how well/poorly an employer manages their employees?

You also realize that a minimum wage increase is not a job promotion?

I'm suspecting your answers are 'no' and 'no.'

You suspect wrong. Did you read what I posted?

A minimum wage increase is not going to increase the productivity of an employee. They will just be getting paid more to stand around and pick their ass. It now just costs the employer more money for them to be able to do so.

It is wholly the employer's fault for retaining employees who stand around and pick their ass, and it is the employee's fault for standing around picking their ass.

Maybe by being forced to pay employees more for picking their ass, the employers will actually get busy firing said employees, or "incentivizing" their work so they become more productive.

An employee should be giving their 110% at their job no matter the wage, and be grateful they even HAVE a fucking job. The better the work you do, the higher you climb up the ladder. Simple and basic stuff.

Honest pay for honest work.

I agree. I am totally against employees who stand around picking their ass. :D

It's not funny. I busted my hump in every W-2 I ever worked in, and my last gig in a big-box retail some 11 years ago was the hardest. Running around the store giving the 110%, while watching coworkers just lollygag around. So I wind up doing their work as well. And due to "corporate culture", these jamokes were never held accountable. I worked so hard I blew out my hip (due to a previous bodily complaint that resurfaced because of all the exertion), and could no longer work the job. Even to this day, the same stores continue to employ people with NO WORK ETHIC. Drives me batty.

Yes. The "seeking effective employees" part is underdiscussed. Employers paying more may expect the person to be able to read and write and advanced things like that. So they will be taking the pictures of the burgers and fries off of the cash register keys that have been necessary in so many places.

The other thing that gets underdiscussed in the media - may have already been discussed here- is that raising the minimum wage throw a pretty good size log on the fire for any company that is considering more options to automate.

Not sure yet about the unintended consequences for immigration. The dems are dependent on support - overtly and covertly- from republicans and democrats who want to maintain the flow of cheap labor. So, you are going to raise the minimum to 15 and still expect them to support labor from mexico/and south just because they think we need more diversity? Ahh, I dont think so.

Anyone hiring illegal immigrants are not paying them based off of a minimum wage so the issue has nothing to do with flow of cheap labor....they are paid under the table. Minimum wage only affects those who actually receive a W-2 salary and pay taxes.

Raising minimum wage should not really affect automation because whether you are paying them $10 or $15 an hour, it is always cheaper in the long run to automate like in fast food where they have order kiosks and thus less cashiers. That is just keeping up with technology.

If a minimum wage means better qualified employees for certain jobs there still are a shit load of jobs in service and retail that dont require a ph.d to work at. rocket scientists are not needed to bus tables, clean floors, stock warehouses or maintain premises inside and outside.

This is easily remedied by better management no matter what the minimum wage is....

Not when the fat cats cannot tell that the lower-level managers are also picking their ass. It was a horrible culture I witnessed through the years.

Hell, my store manager was a kick-asser, but I could tell his hands were tied. He did what he could, so much shit I witnessed. Man oh man. And after I left, my store manager was transferred and they got a Mr. Softee manager who never lit a fire under their asses. Now the store is in the absolute dumps when it comes to customer service. Nobody in the store cares, because the store manager doesn't care.

It's such a stupid idea. Small business owners have limited budgets for payroll. If I can afford 20 employees at 7.5 that's 10 at 15/hr so I have to let half my employees go.

Someone teach Democrats basic math

someone needs to teach you basic math.

if you need 10 people to run a restaurant, maybe you get by with 9. You can’t run your business with 5 regardless of the wages. You don’t think a business that hired 10 people at 7.5 would hire only 5 at 7.5 if they could?

I am against the minimum wage, but your logic is below sophomoric.
