A drink to take the edge off...

Quote from Cocaine:

I am considering taking one shot of alcohol (and one shot only) at 9am to get ready for the opening hour. I find that one drink and I am at my optimal but have never actually tried this for the purposes of trading. I think it may help me take the edge off and focus. Anymore than one shot and I think it will be counterproductive.

Thoughts/comments?

PS Just for reference I am a profitable trader (0ver 100K+ per year in equities). I just want more courage!

LOL hey man you are obviously doing something right...

Give it a shot (get it?) and see what you think...hey if it works, then you're good to go...if it doesn't well, you're a good enough trader to be honest with yourself about it.

But you'll never know unless you try it. Make it bourbon.

I had one of my best years last year (still cant break the 200K barrier though!) so I guess I put it on hold. I am happy that I at least tried the experiment, even though its not a viable long term solution.
Perhaps I will look into what you talked about in your post. I appreciate the info.

I just noticed the age of this thread. Did you find a solution?

As I have sometimes traded after a few drinks( in the last hours of trading instead of before trading ), I can say that it's not good for trading: you lose focus, rapidity, you notably forget staged orders if you're used to have a lot, you spend too much time replying to threads thinking you must share an absolute truth about trading ( LOL ... )

I am wondering what level of alcoholism you consider a bad habit in the US. I am sure we are drinking a lot more here in France. It's traditional for some to drink wine at every meal, and taking "aperos" in between. You're considered alcaholic if you are already drunk at noon( LOL ).

If you take my example, I am 25 years old and in the last 8 years, my maximum no alcohol run must have been 3 weeks. I am more used to have something like 2 days alcohol at night, 1 day off( moderately ) and I am still drinking the bar like a moronic teenager once a week, with cohorts of ashamed actions( LOL ). When I start to drink, it's hard to stop. I only drink at night, never at lunch or in the day. I don't think it really has bad influence on my mental besides hangovers and sometimes shame.

What do you think? Am I alcaholic?

No, I don't think so. Personally, I try to not drink for 2 - 3 days per week usually starting on Monday. I don't drink in the morning. I will drink some wine at night with food on those days that I drink. I agree that pulling the trigger is sometimes hard.

Why stop after one drink, finish the bottle before trading. You make 100k+ per year trading, yet you ask such a stupid question.

the guy's screen name is cocaine.

what would you expect?

asking about going to church and pray for courage before the opening bell?
