A Daytrader's Story

Quote from daniel_m:

if we can't call that the behaviour of an "idiot" -- whose can we?

(i'd nominate myself here, but i just don't have the credentials :D)

:p it's the behaviour of a compulsive gambler, a mentally ill person. this guy obviously could not help himself, he needs intervention before the worst happens.

Quote from marketsurfer:

the MAJOR difference is that a trader feels no NEED to trade all the time . a gambler feels a NEED to be trading at all times particularly when he is losing. a trader does not have to trade, a gambler who is trading has to trade.

second that!

Ahhhh labels...

Well I totaly agree with you that there are 'compulsive traders' and 'traders', but make no mistake about it ----> we are all gambling!

Your friend :D

hey meet me in chat if youd like....

The real difference is not between trading and gambling, but between compulsive and strategically advantaged.

Someone can be accused of being a gambler by trading compulsively. The reverse is also true, a casino gambler who has the game down so that he is assured of consistant profits is not really a "gambler".

20 years ago Bob was a card counter that got banned from all the Casinos in Atlantic City. I honestly think that it helps him trade well. He sits here all day reading the tapes, hardly looks at the charts and can see the move before it happens a lot of the time.
Weirds me out because I have spent years learning TA. :)

to use your definition, trading is the one "gamble" in life that i have total control over. therefore it is not gambling to me.

No, I am married to another Bob.:D
He used to make nice money card counting.....it wasn't gambling, more like a job. Now they use too many decks and reshuffle too often to do it.:(

Yes, and Trading_Guy (the $160,000 loser) also steeped himself in TA, and clearly that alone is not a guarantee of success.

TA used and interpreted incorrectly is a major cause of losses.
