That's OK. This isn't a negative for Conservatives, as Trump will likely not run again and if he did, he wouldn't be successful.
The psychology of anyone running for President can be questioned, merely for running, and more (questioned) the more they want the position. The desire for fame is worth little to those of us meditating in caves, but as a kind of paycheck, it is what motivates anyone who is willing to do legitimate work for that kind of paycheck, and might well be what motivates them to do the right thing.
You're alternative is a cynical man, who may actually despise the need to put oneself in front of voters every two, four or six years, despising the nation for what s/he must endure every two, four or six years. At which point they may be in it for the money, or for ideological power not regulated by the opinion of a "base" of people within the nation, preferably the majority. By money i don't mean the salary, such as a mere $400k/yr. I mean all the influence that can be peddled to foreign nations and corporations...and all the front running of stocks that can be done with a certain vantage point over the markets...for self and family.
A President, allied with his/her own nation, is basic. Better if the President loves his nation. Your alternative is someone who seeks fame and fawning from outside one's borders, leading to unfair treatment of one's own country. Better to treat all nations fairly, but one's own nation fairly first.
The desire to be famous for having/doing the "best ever" is exactly what you want from your politicians. The rest of us are ok with just 15 minutes of fame.

I respectfully disagree. He’s so popular with the base and if you look at all the people who ran last time, they were pretty boring/uncharismatic individuals. I think he would win the nomination easily if he chose to run again. Many will feel it was stolen from him. In recent years the losing nominee has not run again, but if you go back there’s precedent for it (Jefferson, Jackson, WJB, Cleveland). TR ran again, but was running against his party’s sitting president and ended up forming his own party.
Yeah, if he chose to run again tomorrow. But not in four years.
For somebody to surpass him in 4 years a real star has to emerge.
