9-9-9

Quote from CaptainObvious:

There will end up being more exemptions on this tax than what it actually applies to. Simple? I don't think so.
The pizza mans idea of simple is, 999 fits on a bumper sticker, it's works in a 10 second sound bite, it sticks in your head. The guy is a very good promoter/marketer, but I hope the bar for president is set a wee bit higher than that.
Do all ya'll "traders" see a trend here? 2000 we get frat boy GW. 2008 we get all talk no action Obama, and now we're seriously considering a f'n pizza promoter? The dumbing down of America has moved from the classroom to presidential elections, and people wonder why we're falling apart as a nation.
what was that Buckley quote?

"I'd rather have nine people picked at random from the phone book than nine Harvard graduates on the Supreme Court."

The way this election is going leads me to believe the bumper stickers, once the GOP figures out who it will run, will say:

"Our moron is better than your moron"

Cain's last "9" is a national sales tax but little detail is available on what is taxed and what is not. However, since his website states that 9-9-9 is step 1 in getting to the "Fair Tax" One can assume that the details for the last "9" are similar to it.

HR25 (The Fair Tax Act of 2011) has this summary:

"Fair Tax Act of 2011 - Repeals the income tax, employment tax, and estate and gift tax. Redesignates the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 as the Internal Revenue Code of 2011. Imposes a national sales tax on the use or consumption in the United States of taxable property or services. Sets the sales tax rate at 23% in 2013, with adjustments to the rate in subsequent years. Allows exemptions from the tax for property or services purchased for business, export, or investment purposes, and for state government functions. "

well thanks seneca, that's the first time anybody explained to me wht the "Fair Tax" is. So basically it's just a national sales tax. It is quite controversial. Basically the rich would get off scott free, but they are only 1% anyway and it seems like we are wasting a lot of time and energy trying to figure out how to get them.

I would like it if it was accompanied by a huge increase in food stamps and also gas stamps that would pay for gas and diesel and tolls and bus and train fare. I know it's kind of screwy taxing people then giving the money back, but that is a way to means test. Making food exempt would only keep more of the rich's money in their pockets.

I like it better than 999, but I like Cains idea of making used goods exempt.

Otherwise we already do this in most states at the state level, it isn't that complicated. If you buy retail for your business you just give them your number and the purchase is exempt.

At the rate we are spending I don't know what 23% would do.

Everybody would like it the first payday. No nothing taken out, no federal no medicare, no ss. Only state, and the state would probably start getting heat to convert to all sales tax, and their stupid health insurance premiums.

But they might get a little pissed their first trip to Walmart.

Polls show at this time Herman Cain is the only republican candidate who can beat Obama. The rest are just fluff.
I agree, the only reason I voted for Obama was because he was black. As far as I could tell that was the only thing that made him different from the rest. I'm kind of over it, but the rest of the world isn't.

I listened to Ron Paul on CNBC this morning. The democrats won't admit it, but his policies are a lot more to the democrats liking than Obama's.

He is the only true anti war candidate. And the only one who has ideas and a concern for the dwindling middle class.

Has a ring to it. Mine is a bit more cynical. It would read:

We got one too, and ours is blacker.

I like the simplicity but 9-9-9 is very regressive. Good taxes would be invisible. 9-9-9 would be a giveaway to the richest (most money in savings) while taxing the poorest.

Imagine paying 20% tax to buy something. All non essential consumption would stop. Plus people at bottom wrung wouldn't have money to survive.

This is a tax plan for the ultra rich.
