To your defense one of their midget subs was spotted earlier that morning, and sunk. Making the US the one's to fire the first shots of the Pacific war, not the Japanese as is popular opinion.

Yeah, I guess the fleet was a couple of hundred miles offshore and certainly outside of radar range.
