800 x 600 resolution is less straining?

Even my PC has 1600x1200 resolution, I always use 800x600.

Otherwise fonts appear to small, causing eye strain.

Maybe because I like to place the monitor far away in the desk and brightness settings quite dark.
 
only really old people use 800x600, you get 4 times the dexstop space going to 1600x1200, just increase the font size in windows and your problem will be solved.
 
Another option to consider (if using Windows) is to use Large Size DPI for the Display - it makes everything bigger.

Display Properties -> Settings Tab -> Advanced Button -> General Tab

The only downside is that some poorly written apps dont scale correctly and consequently their GUI's either look like crap or dont work when using this setting.

I agree. Since I figured out how to get my 30" Dell to display at 640x480 my headaches have just about gone away.

Agreed on all counts.
When you get into your mid-40's your eyesight heads South in a major way.
I love 1024 x 768 with regular 96 dpi.
