There is an entire world of canned fish that many Americans and British have never even heard of. I'm talking about ultra-high quality artisanal products that are very expensive.

Many Americans of a certain age can think of only three things when they hear "canned fish": sardines, tuna and salmon. But there is an incredibly wide range of products out there.

I don't do much canned fish, but - for sure. There are some amazing varieties out there, especially from northwestern Europe. Latvia has the best smoked sprats ever...

(NO, I don't mean lutefisk or surstromming. Those are just... perversions. Same source as the seriously-bent German porn, I'd guess. )

There's also the ones in can, should be identical but cheaper. If you like that then you might also try marinated herring with spices.

They are; the jarred version is more of a pretty present sort of thing.

If you like that then you might also try marinated herring with spices.

I actually like herring a lot, but more the Russian version than the Euro one. The spice mix in the latter is a bit odd for me.

American food and drink is sought over by the world. There are more people inside any McDonald’s than all the tapas restaurants combined in any given town.
