4K Ultra HD Trading

In my experience, this first generation of 4k gives a lot of grief, both the monitors and the graphics cards. I have one now but am going to get rid of it and switch back to lower-res displays.

The current ones either give you pretty poor refresh/fuzziness under HDMI 1.4a, or else you have to use something called MST (which is basically a hack, 2 "streams" for one monitor) over DisplayPort to give you 60hz. I think there are going to be future versions of DisplayPort (1.3?) with the bandwidth to avoid this headache.

I plan to wait until newer connectivity and better graphics card/driver support comes out before trying 4k again.
 
...... so what do you do if the 4k TV dies on you (for whatever reason) while youre using it? where's your redundancy?...your backup plan? ..... wait a few days/weeks while it gets repaired?

Amazon cut their price of new Seiki 39" se39uy04 4k TV's to $400. It was $500 on Friday, when I ordered a used one for ~$404.

My used Seiki arrived today, but I have only been able to get a 15Hz refresh rate from my fanless Asus Radeon hd6450 video card when I drive the monitor at 3840x2160, which is not so bad for the video card, considering it is advertised as having a maximum supported resolution of 2560x1600.

For completely static content, the display is amazing, and it's also great for looking at large amounts of source code, but, for everything else, 15Hz is terrible. Until I had this 15Hz monitor, I had not realized how much refresh rate contributes to choppiness in video affects like scrolling, cursor motion, or even characters being displayed as I type them. The difference is especially clear to me because my computer is also driving a 60Hz display right next to the Seiki, and I find myself moving all of my windows to the 60Hz display to get anything done, including writing this message. I am hoping 30Hz will be better. I expect I'll probably buy a new video card tomorrow and find out.

Oh wow. Your experience will be much better with a proper graphics card!
 
So... you get a 4K display.... with text so small you can't read it... then you have to increase the font. Not to mention the fact 4K sucks up so much bandwidth you can only display low refresh rates. What's the point?

Also not to mention... what could be less important to trading success than "screen res"?

(One benefit... the pixels are so small that when you have bad ones you can barely see them without a magnifying glass.)

It is true that if you go 4K for monitor, you don't want anything much smaller than 39". 39" is the equivalent of having 4x 1080p 19.5" screens with no bezels. Is 1080p on a 20" monitor too small for you? For most people, this is probably one of the most common setups out there.

The refresh rate is a limitation of the HDMI spec, not 4K itself. It will be resolved with the new HDMI 2.0 spec which is capable of 8K if I recall correctly...

So, you get a new mobo with HDMI 2.0... and you still have to increase the font to be able to see things without mashing your face to the front of the panel...

Is anyone else experiencing the 15Hz refresh problem? I could never afford one of these TVs, but it strikes me as being bad for 4K tech in general if this is the case.
