40yotrader

STOP THE PRESSES!

40yotrader reappears!

After a nine month absence, the journal keeper known as 40yotrader unexpectedly resurfaced today. ET members rejoiced, and were heartened to learn that in his absence the once popular journal keeper has been cleaning up in the market place. 40, as he is known to his friends, reported consistent monthly profits, some in the five-digit range, since he started trading last November.

But all was not wine and roses. Last December showed a negative result, causing concern and doubt that not only resulted in a $6,000 loss, but one of his famous manly cries.

With the recent banning of Jack Hershey, many veteran ET members had grown unhappy, and rumblings of the message board’s demise were uttered wide and far. But the unexpected return of 40yotrader has given hope to the legions of desperate would be traders nursing hemorrhaging accounts.

In his brief return, 40 failed to mention if his relationship with his mother-in-law had improved now that he is making big bucks instead of foot-long subs. Nor was there any accounting of how he is able to haul in large profits with a volatility based breakout system in a low volatility market environment.

With his return, and reports of success, detractors were left with egg salad on their faces. A new thread entitled “Is it possible to trade and lose weight while eating nothing but Subway sandwiches” mysteriously appeared in the Chit Chat section, but informed sources tell us that it is just a coincidence.

While 40 did post at least two messages on the highly respected board, he informed his loyal supporters that his return would be short-lived. He said that he would be returning to the underground world of the lurker, while working on yet another wildly profitable trading system.

I frankly wasn't sure what to make of 40, but after reading this post it seems so obvious... I'm almost ashamed that I didn't catch on earlier.

Tampa masterfully demonstrates how a little sarcasm/humor can be brutally effective at revealing the core truth of an issue.

Great post Tampa... Thanks!

40yrold may be perfectly legitimate. But quite a few people felt like chumps after being sucked into whatever he was spinning, then left waiting for the other shoe to drop while he hopped the last stage out of town. And he ought to be made aware of that. If nothing else, this kind of behavior helps to account for the less-than-warm welcome which so many people receive when they try to share their strategies.

Today, I read through the 35 pages of your posts made last year. You created a very good thread.

Your decision to not post to ET when you started to trade real money was probably wise. However, I hope you can share some of your lessons learned over the past months if you have time. What would have have NOT done if you were starting with real money again?

Well done and best wishes!!!

40,

I wonder if you could tell us how the money management aspect of your system worked out. I don't recall all the details but I believe you had a logic for increasing size in drawdowns and found in backtesting it was the key to your profitability.

just re-read your 35 pages thread, glad it has a nice ending for one, congrat.:)

A nice ending?

What, is he closing up shop?

The game's hardly over just yet now, is it.

The guy increases trade size during drawdowns. No wonder he's been making money so far. As much as such behavior is generally advised against -- ie, to those who want to stay in the game over the long term -- the strategy, over shorter periods of time, is (probably) quite likely to result in positive returns. In the long run, however, it's just a matter of time until his number's called.

it look like he is average down but he is not as far as I can tell.

If you reread his thread you'll see he uses an anti-martingale strategy where he increases size when he is winning. Quite the opposite of upping size on a drawdown.

Check out:
Anti-Martingale System

Before reading this you should look at the Martingale system. This system is designed for use on the even chance bets on a roulette table but can be used on any even chance bets.

Concept

Playing the Anti-Martingale is precisely what the name suggests, it's the Martingale in reverse. Instead of doubling your bets after a losing spin you double your bet after a winning spin. Basically you place a bet on an even chance and 'let it ride' for a set number of spins. Before starting the system you must decide how many spins you are going to play for, alternatively you may decide to remove your winnings when your nerve breaks or even remove part of the winnings after a number of spins and let the remaining bet continue for a little bit longer.

I could have sworn he used a martingale system. In his third post on his journal thread is this:

What I found was the martingale category helped me accomplish two goals (consistent returns, and low drawdown periods).

Maybe I was misinterpreting his strategy, or else he claimed it was a martingale strategy but it wasn't.
