OK, like I said, I don't know a thing about hunting. But I never have seen an M16 with a scope. A granade launcher maybe (which would DEFINITELY do in those pesky squirrels, rabbits, prairie dogs and other assorted rodents). I seem to recall that at one time there was a long barrel version but I thought it was a failure. Not sure though. My memory ain't what it was. Came in this morning thinking I was flat, and damned if I wasn't long some HPQ:confused: Old age sucks. At least I got lucky with the trade though. Must have been good karma.

Right again. (As always!) That is why the M16s were not permitted in the DMZ in Korea in the 60's. Rules, rules, rules. That then, PDT now. Always something:)

Do you guys remember the L.A. riots from the early 90's? After the Rodney King beating, bunch of blacks started looting in Korea Town. Due to the fact that we had the right to bear arms, my father as well as many other fathers were able to protect our business. If we were not able to protect our business, then we wouldn't have a means of making a living, then we wouldn't have a place to sleep, a thing to eat, and probably run out of hope.

The NRA was pleased with us because we exercised our right.

I would not like to live in a world where we were completely defenseless, and where our only protection are the men in blue. They are not everywhere, and sometimes they don't risk their lives for us. We cannot be dependant on them nor the government. We should be able to protect ourselves.

Besides, I don't feel I should give any sympathy to the man trying to kill me. If he has no respect for humanity and civilization... show no mercy?

One of the worst fatal flaws in gun control is that is against the 2nd ammendment which limits the federal government.

Great idea limiting the federal government.There are some strange parallels between the gun control act of 1968 and Nazi gun laws.

I've been reading all these points and as an admitted right winger i will confess i support gun control.....BUT ONLY IF THEY WILL ENFORCE IT! how many times do you hear about guys/athletes, actors ect... being pulled over and the cops find an ILLEGAL HAND GUN?...and then he get's fined 50.00 and 2 hours of community service...Many states and cities (like NYC) have strict gun laws that will put you in jail for a year if you have an unregistered gun...to the best of my knowledge Bernie Goetz is the only one who went to jail on gun charges. I would only support a gun control bill if there was 1) immunity period of 1 year to hand in the guns and 2) anyone after that period went to jail for 1 year no questions asked if they were found with a gun after that period.....the funny thing is that most liberals want gun control, yet if minorities were being picked up left and right for possessing illegal arms, the liberal attorneys and activists would be fighting the law to keep them out of jail.

I actually understood Murray's post. Not saying I agree (completely). Nor do I recognize the sentence structure exactly. But wow....I understood virtually every word!

I thought I would post this for discussion purposes. I would agree that the anti-gun lobby gets a little emotional with their arguments. But, so does the pro-gun lobby with the rapist lying at the women's feet, dead because of a gun.

To establish some basic crime stats. Using WWW.CDC.GOV and branching out from there. About 15% of rapes occur at the hands of a stranger. About 75% of rapes occur at the hands of a spouse, former spouse, significant other.

In 1999 there were 28,874 Firearm Related deaths.

16, 599 were suicides and 10, 828 were homicides.
And 299 were legal interventions. Read Dead Rapist, Robber

This means,

A women is more likely to be murdered by the gun of her husband

A women is more likely to be assaulted by the gun of her husband

A women is more likely to be raped at gunpoint by her husband

A women is more likely to be accidently shot by the gun of her husband

Than she is to shoot and kill a rapist.

So bad choice of husbands aside, I think the case for the net benefits of guns in the home is a little overstated. I know everyone's family is different than the above, but these are the people that have access to guns. Not all of them are crack addicts, gang bangers or mobsters. Many of the guns used were purchased legally, just like I got mine. Not saying I support a ban on guns, but let's not overstate their benefits either.

I got rid of all my 9s, 40s and kept five 45s.
 
trdrmac - your comparative essentially attributes all of the 10,000 homicides to some guy at home whacking his wife with his gun - when of course the vast majority of those homicides are from criminal.

So unless there's a breakdown of those 10,828 homicides into "murders committed using home guns" vs. the typical criminals killing innocents or other criminals/gangbangers the statistic isn't very meaningful (i.e., if 10,800 were criminals or gangbangers doing the killing and 28 involved the guy next door - it's a completely different meaning than if it's the other way around).

It wasn't in the stats you gave, but it's the accidentals that I never understand. How the heck does anyone but a complete idiot shoot themselves with a gun while cleaning it? Hey, I'll support an intelligence test as a prerequisite for buying a gun :)
