I've got a buddy who has a conceal carry. He calls it his "fire extinguisher", telling me he never wants to be a victim in a mass shooting, the fire. At some other time, when I mention I think gun control expansion is a good idea, because of all the mass shootings, he tells me, "your odds of being in a mass shooting are like one in a million."
your buddy isn't wrong, the odds are fairly low. There's gotta be a middle ground of having mentally unstable Trumpers carrying guns and putting ourselves in a position where another Trump and his loyalists just roll over democratic opposition in a fascistic takeover. Ricter is pointing out that the man carries a gun because he's worried about a mass shooter event, but then freely admits the chance of it happening is so remote there's no point to carry a gun.
Then he is carrying for the wrong reason. That line of thinking means he wants to be a hero, and not carry his firearm for it's true purpose...To defend his own life with deadly force if necessary.
