29,673 Inactive Voters, who are not reachable at their home addresses, who voted between Sept. 9, when the early voting period began, and Election Day are now "inactive" in the voting registration system.

That number is not insignificant. Gov. Roy Cooper, a Democrat, won by only 10,277 votes statewide over former Republican Gov. Pat McCrory last year.

Is confirmation mailing a crime or somehow invalidates you from voting in NC? Because I sure as hell don't respond to 80% of mail asking for 'confirmation'.

The initial "confirmation" mailing means that the mail was not returned as undeliverable. It means that the person actually lives at the dwelling listed on their voter registration. Some counties do a second mailing called a "confirmation mailing" stating that your status will be inactive unless you respond to the mailing.

And yes, voting when you do not live at your listed address is a crime.

Are you going to dismiss the fact that "not answering the confirmation" also renders them inactive? For all we know, 5% of those numbers are address changes, while the rest are people not bothering w/responding. If I were a betting man, I'd say that was the case.

So again, is it against voting rules to not answer the confirmation?

It is against to law to submit a voter registration form with a false address of residence. That probably covers 80% or more of the individuals. Remember address changes are picked up when you register your new residence (required within 30 days) via a drivers license or voter registration change.

Also your status only goes to inactive if the post card is returned as "Not Deliverable as Addressed" which means no forwarding mailing address is listed. If the post card is returned as undeliverable with a reference to a forwarding address then their new election district is informed and their status is set to pending move confirmation which triggers a mailing in their new county to please update their voting registration.

If the person did not leave a forwarding address then it is likely they never lived at the location on their voting registration form.
