28 million people in the US on Food Stamps

Quote from Arnie:

I would imagine a lot of those 26M are getting food stamps because thay can, not because they are "starving".

Most welfare programs in this country are based on growth.....not eliminating the root causes for the program. Do any of you really believe this country has 26m people starving?

Here in Chicago, I have a female friend who gets food stamps because she has a low income, but she owns a freaking house free and clear of mortgage.
Torontotrader you are an idiot!!!!

Quote from Humpy:

From far away it is obvious that the USA era of dominance is drawing to a close. .
Fear not. The US will save you, Humpy.

History has taught us that it is inevitable that the US will have to save the all of Europe for a 3rd time. That should get the US back on track to self-discipline.

Hey Canadian asshole! She owns the car too, imagine that. And lastly she spends way more money in the bars than I do.
So worry about your frozen-ass country first!!!

Quote from laputa:

if those people don't get basic welfare they would rob you on the street. Yeah some may do it now anyways but many more would join them. Think of it as a cost of living in a relatively safe place.
That`s what prisons are for?

Actually America has one of the lowest overall tax rates in the developed (and even developing world)(see link). Its amazing how heartless people can be, I have no problem giving some of my income away to help my fellow person and think that we should give more away.

We are the most advanced and wealthy "society" the world has ever scene. The way we stay rich is by working with others not by striking out selfishly on our own. See "tragedy of the commons"

I agree with the posters that said things like, think of it as a payment to live in a safe society.

Many conservatives and capitalists hated (and hate) FDR for his "socialist" ideas and programs; but I believe that those socialist programs are the reason we aren't a communist country. Ask if you want more of an explanation.

In the 1950's the richest were paying 90% tax rates on income earned over $400K, that’s high, what you pay now is nothing, even if they raise it a little. Does a 4% tax on the upper portion of your income really change your life style much?

Is giving your income to the politicians, the solution? Why not help them, help themselves, you can`t provide for them forever.

We are all starving.. for something..

Looks, from the replies that I have read, most of YOU are starving from a lack of GOD! There is very little compassion or Love in your responses.

Sure, there are some people that abuse the system. These are the same people that trade on inside info, steal money to open a brokerage account and don't pay back loans to people who helped you get your great trading career going in the first place.

If anything, we should be teaching the principles Ronald Reagan stood for.. self sufficiency, hard work, saving and investing while government should cut fees/regulation/red tape +taxes to foster risk taking by all Americans.

We should shut down all these liberal public schools +colleges, which teach NOTHING to our youth +disseminate propaganda (brain wash) from failed economic regimes/systems. MAYBE then people would have a reason to WORK for something other than the G-Man!!!

Last, we need to make all government positions limited to a single term of service +cut their pay.. NO MORE CAREER POLITICIANS!

Barton Biggs is wise. And not some camo wearing survivalist fruitcake. In his new book he talks about this topic. One idea I am taking from him is stocking wine. Lasts forever is stored properly.

I have a great link for a website about being prepared. Not stuff you find on the FEMA site. But real deal..longgggg term. PM me if you want it. It is a safesite I assure you.

OK now.. fess up.. what is this website? THANK YOU!!

Quote from 1Reason:

Maybe thats what they are telling you in school as I dont think you will find fortune or the WSJ talking about how "planned the economy" is in china.

China in many ways is more of a free market than the US or Canada.

Minimum wage that is below free market vaule
almost no EPA
no OSHA
local governments that encourage growth
Zoning regs that choke the hell out of growth? dont have them
lower taxes - income and property
no unions

If you think for a minute that where you live is not more of a planned economy try opening a new oil refinery or factory that produces PVC. You will find out quickly who is living in the "planned economy" pretty quick.

I can not think of one type of business and especially factories that would be easier from a government compliance point of view to open in the US than in China. Can YOU?

Excellent commentary.. in many ways, this is what we need to move back toward if we are to have any chance for a revival of the American Dream (of opportunity for all people here in the US).

Try to start a hedge fund -the regulations are stifling. What? Only the rich want to earn an income? Why can't someone who is poor start up a fund? The rich do not have a chokehold on intelligence. If you do.. unless you always make money for your clients, be prepared for some serious problems from the authorities.

Um, the Chinese still have a centrally planned economy to a large extent. The government plays a much more direct role in supporting institutions such as education, scientific research, etc. They're about as far from the libertarian ideal as you can get.

Uhh, when $12 billion of taxpayers' money is spent on an engineered war every month, including on weapons production quotas (c'mon, would L-martin, Boeing, L3, Halliburton et al ever starve?), how can you say we do not have communism?

the party elite get fat from this monthly $12 billion quota, while the people starve and line up for bread and rations.

Only a tiny percent of people "OWN" a house; rather they work 40-60 hours a week just to pay the bank usary fees for 10-30 years. The BANK owns your house.

America morphs more and more towards the communist economic model each day.

At a minimum, we already have economic facism.
