Koch-backed Americans For Prosperity calls on Congress to block Trump's Mexico tariffs

The conservative political advocacy group Americans for Prosperity is calling on lawmakers to block attempts by President Trump to impose tariffs on Mexico, the president of the organization told CBSN on Tuesday.

"We don't think they're the right approach. They first and foremost hurt American consumers," said Americans For Prosperity President Tim Phillips during an interview with Tanya Rivero on CBSN's "Red & Blue."

The group, backed by the influential Charles and David Koch, issued a press release Tuesday urging lawmakers to "reclaim their constitutionally mandated authority to impose tariffs and prevent further unilateral tariff increases by the president."

Sen. Chuck Schumer is daring President Trump to put his tariffs where his mouth is.

The New York Democrat predicted Tuesday that Trump isn’t going to make good on his threat to slap massive tariffs on Mexican imports, tying his theory to the president’s toothless penchant for “talking tough."

“Frankly, I don’t believe that President Trump will actually go through with the tariffs,” Schumer, the Senate’s top Democrat, said in a speech from the floor. “President Trump has a habit of talking tough and then retreating, because his policies often can’t be implemented or don’t make sense ... so I wouldn’t be surprised at all if President Trump doesn’t follow through on these tariffs, either.”

Somehow I've got to think that with Christopher Steele turning State's evidence for Messieurs Huber, Horowitz, and Durham - that Congress will be rather pressed on other matters in the coming weeks and months. And the Koch's don't have the sway they once did.

Looks like all Mexico needed to do was buy votes in the farm belt.

Or ... maybe ... all they have to do is say that they will.

This is mostly about Trump trying to save face and wiggling out of his tough talk in light of the Republicans' threat to oppose him on this.

That could be a very workable accommodation for both parties. Mexico is the Country benefitting the most from the US-China trade spat and we really don’t need to encourage turning South American Rain Forest into Soybean fields. The Mexican President has already pledged to send a few thousand National Guard troops to the border which probably won’t help much but at least both sides are working on a resolution. The Mexican citizens hate the caravans but it’s a money maker for the cartels.

That works.

Interesting. I would have thought that the original plan of stopping immigration would be most important to you. :) Instead, we can forgot about the immigration part as long as Mexico buys vegetables. :D

Let me get you caught up. The Mexican President ordered 6,000 National Guard Troops to the Guatemalan Border this morning.

Ok so Mr T gets deal for troops to stop immigration plus more verduras sales for USA. Looks like Mr T putting the screws down got Mexico to jump. Mr T is da man. Liberals are probably foaming at the mouth bout now.

What is bizarre is how popular Trump is with ordinary Mexican citizens (not the politicos or the upper class).
