It nearly was. Those whose number came up had an immediate choice of going to jail, or off to fight a war they were either gung-ho or ambivalent about, or else believed was wrong and wanted no part of. Many that were weak -- I would have been one of them had I not been saved by chance -- would go off to fight a war that every bone in their body told them was wrong. Only a few were strong enough to leave, knowing they might never be able to return.Until the draft is at gunpoint
