The company can't prove what is a law enforcement issue.
Until there's evidence that they turned it over to the authorities, it didn't happen. I'm sure you remember: WHERE"S THE EVIDENCE

Well if you don’t believe them then feel free to call the local police departments where the company is located and demand copies of the police reports.

Rational people believe what rather company and its employees are stating.
