2018 MidTerm Trends

I strongly disagree. The only hope for Democrats to take back the Senate and the House in the 2018 elections is to arrive at messaging which addresses the concerns of Americans across the country. The current "hate Trump" and identity politics will not be successful to propel Democratic fortunes in 2018 -- in fact sticking with this as their message will only cost the Democrats more seats.

The Democrats need to properly focus their money and couple it with a consistent. crisp message which addresses the concerns of Americans. In fact they should ignore Trump on the campaign trail and hit on their core message over & over again.

Disagree. The fact that dems just pulled within 4-7 points in races they lost by 16-30 points in November suggest otherwise. The last thing they should do is ignore Trump imo.I don't think they should give up on a strategy that just proved it can gain them 15- 20 points in elections.

You are confusing a high turn-out four-year election with off-cycle low-turnout elections. The comparison of the number of points the lost by is meaningless. In fact - in the election in Georgia the Democrats stated that if they did not win by at least 6 points than their strategy can only be deemed as failed.

Well - the news is that the Democrats lost once again. You can either move forward doing the same failed thing over and over again - the very definition of insanity. Or the Democrats can find a strategy that works with a message which appeals to Americans across the country.

Bleating about Trump over and over again -- only empowers Trump and distracts the voters from whatever message you have.

Right, because bleating over Obama over and over again caused so much harm to Republicans in 2010 and 2014. Incumbency kills during mid-terms especially with a polarizing figure in the WH, Dems would do well if they remember history.

By 4-7 points in gerrymandered red districts they lost by 16- 30 points less than a year ago.If these were races that were usually toss ups the outcomes would have likely been different.

Democrats made huge gains in red districts in less than a year, beat trump by 3 million votes, only lost The EC by 78,000 votes and Trump is around 10 points lower in approval and favorability than when he was elected. They can make some improvements but giving up on Trump is the last thing they should do.

A similar situation unfolded in 2009 when three blue-state seats opened up following Obama’s win. The GOP gained ground in each of those special elections (without winning), foreshadowing the 2010 midterms when Republicans picked up 63 seats and took control of the House.

And Hillary was supposed to win in a landslide.

Must have been surprise for Democrats to lose a Presidential election they thought was "in the bag". Sadly they have not learned the lessons from this loss. They merely go back and repeat over & over "we only lost the EC by a little, we won the popular vote, we are only polling 6 points down instead of 20 in some districts, etc."

This mindset is setting the Democrats up in 2018 for their biggest shellacking yet. Liberals and their party don't appear to have learned the lesson that the Democratic party needs a new message that rings true with most Americans across the country if they want to win in elections instead of the same old identity politics and spewed half-truths.

Bernie Sanders should serve as an example of someone who has a message and vision (even if some don't care for it) of the type that could propel the Democrats to significant gains.

Dems had the baggage of an unpopular candidate along with Russians and the FBI working against her. Liberals need the Republican bills to pass and they can run against them without needing any message than to save the public from Republican cruelty, worked in 2006 and it will work again like clockwork

The problem was Hillary's likeability and her campaigning, things like only visiting WI once from June to election day and campaigning in swing states and overall far less than Trump did.Obama ran with a similar message but with better campaigning and better likability and won twice by much bigger margins than Trump did.

This gets back to Hillary was the worse possible candidate the Democratic party could possibly select. However for 2020 the Democratic bench is not deep. It is very possibly that they repeat the same blunder.
