Any truly patriotic US president would immediately summon top experts from Ivy League Universities, McKinsey and other consultants, Industry "hall of fame" personalities and have them formulate and device a plan to cut US HC costs by atleast 1/3rds. Fighting protectionist wars with other nations and saving puny amounts is a waste of time and brings serious risks of tough reactions from major powers like China.

You do realize that AAPL spends hundreds of millions to hire the best people in the world and put together the teams that design their products, don't you? There's far more to the cost of a product like an iPhone than the parts and assembly cost. In fact the vast majority of the value accrues to the design piece, not the manufacturing which is nearly a zero margin, completely commodotized business. It's ironic that we're getting this Atlas Shrugged moment of forcing a company to make something for what the government thinks they should and where the government thinks they should courtesy of a bunch of Ayn Rand accolytes!

There are cheaper smartphones on the market but the world now has this idea that if it isn't Apple it isn't good. The most I pay for a smartphone now a days is $250-$350....you have to be an idiot to plop down $500, $650, $850 or a $1000. I can buy a tablet for $50 and a laptop for $150, but smartphones for some reason carry such a damn premium its disgusting....

On the other hand, anyone who buys a $150 laptop might be an "idiot" too; any laptop I've seen at that price is usually not good value either. You don't seem to understand that quality and function sometimes comes at a price.
