to some degree I agree with AMT again ricter.
Real conservatives, the real right... prefer the way the founders set up the U.S. with limited federal govt powers. No income tax but tariffs to raise revenue. (but not the slavery)
Big govt is a beast of the left not the right. Big govt republicans are socialists.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoconservatism
Most neoconservatives had been liberals or leftists in the 1930s and 1940s, then moved right in reaction to Stalinism and supported the Cold War. Some emerged from intellectual milieu of the mid-20th century New York City.[12] Most were liberal Democrats into the 1960s, when they were confronted with the New Left and rethought their positions. Many became followers of Senator Henry M. Jackson, a liberal Democrat in domestic affairs who rejected détente and demanded a hard-line against the Soviet Union in the 1970s.[13]
Initially, the neoconservatives were less concerned with foreign policy than with domestic policy. Irving Kristol's journal, The Public Interest, focused on ways that government planning in the liberal state had produced unintended harmful consequences. Norman Podhoretz's magazine Commentary, formerly a journal of the liberal left, had more of a cultural focus, criticizing excesses in the movements for black equality and women's rights, and in the academic left.[citation needed] Through the 1950s and early 1960s the future neoconservatives had been socialists or liberals strongly supportive of the American Civil Rights Movement, integration, and Martin Luther King, Jr..[14][15]
