IMHO the whole economic model based on perpetual growth needs to stop. When government creates policy based on zero growth we'll be alright.

No one, including Ron Paul, is talking about cutting everything overnight. It has to be gradual. But simply shutting down many overseas bases and pulling out of conflicts (i.e., sending troops home) would bring a significant savings. Then a reduction in force could be done by a hiring freeze and not replacing troops as fast as they retire or take separation packages. Nothing sums up TexASS better than the fact that it has the 7th lowest tax burden in the U.S., the highest state-GDP in the nation and yet is ranked 29th in per capita income, which is also lower than the national average.

Well, the most comparable state to TX is CA, in terms of size and Mexican border issues. I'd chose to live or (especially) start a business in TX long before the Left Coast.

You can find plenty of faults with all the states. Are there any in particular that are prosperous and free? If you want to compare TX in terms of crime, entitlement burdens, etc., it's apples-and-oranges if you bring up somewhere like Utah or N. Dakota. There's a night and day difference in terms of demographics and geography.

And if you want to bring up fraudulent accounting, forget Enron. They paid for their sins. Look at D.C. if you want to see where the books are really cooked and the crooks get off scott free.

Sounds like you might have some other issues, though. Maybe you spent your early years in TX and got bullied a lot?

EMR's fundamental points are, according to him, that Texas is the bastion of Republican and Capitalistic ideals.

The reality is that until LBJ came along the entire south was predominantly democratic as a result of the Civil War. His "Great Society" legislation, especially the civil rights acts that abolished segregation and gave southern blacks the right to vote, caused him to comment "We have lost the South for a generation."

Enron was the worst, but by no means the only example of the Texas brand capitalism.

And, as far as being prosperous, guess again...

Only CT, NY, DC and PR have income inequalities that are worse than TX.

What about SS that does to those with disabilities (real or not) and SSI for "low income"? Those that reap the benes aren't always the ones that pay in. And who funds the huge amounts of Medicare fraud?
