If "free markets" are a Good Thing, there should be no restrictions (beyond basic paperwork) on importing workers.

If freely moving workers across borders is a Bad Thing, then so is "free trade" and unrestricted movement of capital across those borders.
 
We need more H1B visad people i.e. engineers, scientists, financiers and entrepreneurs. I say open the borders to qualified people otherwise these people will go to China, Brazil, Russia.......We can't afford to fall back on the technology race. Borders are open to professional athletes and artists, why not other professionals?
 
Yes, let's outlaw countries. Who needs borders? Just open them up to everyone. It worked out well for the Native American Indians.

if you make $15 a day in lithuania and move here and the pay is $22 per hour but jobs are tight,you take a job for $8,work 12-15 hrs a day ,and soon the guy making $22,who knows what he is doing is out of work,the $8 guy 's boss who is another lithuanian , only hires lithuanian's ,saves on labor,may or may not pay the worker,he has no means of recourse, but charges the customer the going rate,the incoming immigrant who can't speak english and will say yes to any question about his ability to complete the job,because jobs are hard to come by with a language barrier,no contacts,and no papers, may have little or no knowledge of the task,the result is a 2/3 drop in quality ,chances of structural failure,electrical fires increase 5 fold,,and that service sector becomes unavailable for the qualified american's,he can't pay his bills,or buy your product and the quality of life becomes similar to the life the 1st guy left lithuania to get away from,do this for about 3 decades,and your about where we are now..this is the result of turning a blind eye to immigration for the benefit of saving money on labor,or stealing money from the labor pool or the disadvantaged immigrant...so yes ,for the almighty dollar morality of it all...let them walk freely into this country
 
What is the purpose of a country for anyway? Basically, it is hard to survive on your own. Your odds increase dramatically if you band together with others. Anybody who has done time in a state prison quickly realizes this. You either join a gang or suffer the consequences.

Countries were formed when one gang, aka tribes in the old days, took over an entire region. Generally, the head gang leader was called king or emperor by then and instituted hereditary rule out of selfish interest.

Democracies are relatively new. Notwithstanding, the purpose is protect the residents of that country. For example, see the preamble to the US constitution: "establish justice and domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, and promote the general welfare". A country isn't for the welfare of nonresidents or to establish some utopian state with open borders.

Nobody in this thread suggested such a thing.

Just pointing out that free markets require free borders, otherwise all we're doing is replicating the Euro situation in slow motion.

If someone isn't comfortable with the latter, they cannot legitimately claim to be in favor of the former. Which side of that choice you fall on is entirely up to you.

Why not? Its a matter of demand and supply, obviously if you have enough qualified math teachers you are not going to sponsor a teacher from another country to come here, all that paperwork, application fees, attornies etc. costs money, more than you can recoup in a years wages......
 
Are there enough qualified math teachers in the US willing to teach at minimum wage with no benefits? I think not, so lets fire the existing ones and bring in cheaper teachers from India.

In fact, with the internet, why even bring the math teachers to the US? Just fire all the existing teachers in the US and let the students learn online via virtual classrooms with teachers from India.
