.....and the figures below do not account for all the other types of visas used (L1, etc.) and all the third-party contractors. Also keep in mind that these are the new H-1B visas granted for 2009, it does not account for all the existing H-1B visa holders already working at these companies.

If the H-1B visa is anything more than a scheme to supress IT salaries in the U.S.; then take the proper steps to promote a "free market" between U.S. workers and H1-B visa holders..... allow H-1B visa holders to work for any employer in the U.S. during their visa period and not be chained in virtual slavery to a single company.

The H-1B visa situation has nothing to do with a lack of adequately skilled technology workers in the U.S. despite the lobbying of large companies attempting to promote this concept in Washington D.C.

H1-B Visa workers can not work in defense. U.S. citizenship and security clearances are required. Nurses come to the U.S. on H1-C (Nursing act of 1999) and H-2B (Temp worker) visas. H-1B visa workers typically do not work in education at universities, etc... a different type of visa (F1) is required. According to Wired magazine and TechCrunch - over 98% of H-1B visas are used for IT/Technology workers.

Please know the facts before you go rant and rave.

Years ago, and H-1b I worked with told me exactly that.

The ad required experience in electronics manufacturing (which he had on his resume)

We were at an oil company - the 'required experience' had NOTHING to do with our location - it was purely about writing an ad that only he could qualify for.

I couldnt believe he told me this - who did he think the law was supposed to protect
 
i used to work in high tech, and worked with dozens of H1's. the reason companies like them is not because they can't find qualified applicants, it's because H1's are cheaper and can be enslaved.

if an american worker gets pissed off or doesn't get along with their boss, they can find another job. an H1 has no choice but to stay and tough it out because they're probably not gonna find another sponsor. this is coming from the mouth of many H1's who i've spoken to.

it's an open secret in the IT field. in fact this is probably a more important factor than the salary, which is only a little lower than an american's when you add in the overhead for hiring H1's.

it's also volume. more workers, lower 'pravailing wage'

it's interesting that some on this thread think that anyone who's against bringing back indentured servitide (which H-1b most certainly has) is 'anti-American'

Exactly. besides they can be pressured to work much longer hours w/o extra pay! 80 hrs a week is not unusual.
