'10 best countries to retire to' - from UK

Quote from d08:

I was thinking in respect to people paying multiple year salaries because of downloading a few songs off torrents, you might think the RIAA/MPAA people are right but the power they hold over the court system is a good sign of fairness/intrusiveness.
Another thing is taxation based on citizenship, rather than residency. US is the only western country to do this I think.
I'm getting off-topic though, those things don't matter for the average retiree but do describe the country in general. Yet you said "socialist" and for a retiree, that doesn't matter at all, in fact retirees benefit in a socialist setting.

Europe is much bigger than UK and France (UK isn't even considered to be Europe by many). Eastern Europe is pretty big, not including Russia, and entirely comparable for retiring - in fact many retirees from Northern Europe and Germany already reside in Eastern Europe.

If you look at intentional homicide rate around the world, US has a really bad ranking - there are loads of countries doing better and not just Australia, Canada and UK.

Don't get me wrong, US has a lot of positives. It's the best country in the world for consumers and the still the land of opportunity, these are some important points - although the second one is irrelevant for retirees.

i totally agree.. make your money where money is expensive.. retire where money is cheap... IE work in manhatten for 300 grand.. retire in South america where 300 grand you could live the rest of your life on..

How about this: live where money is expensive, retire where money is expensive.

Who wants to live in shithole south america? Does ANYONE grow up in south america and say "gee, I want to stick around here!" USA is the best country on earth, and Brittan is just as attractive! EU is socialist idiot land, Russia India and China are poor!

No one wants to live anywhere but USA or Brittan, and possibly Canada and Australia too.

South America. LOL. What a shithole. I guess you live in some shithole country right now to even think of that.

Anyone who thinks that retiring to the U.S. from any other developed country is a reasonable thing to do has completely lost their mind, unless, of course, you will never need medical care, or you have a few billion extra you won't need to pay the cardiologist with. I can't even begin to imagine what the premium for medical insurance on an 80 year old without medicare would be!

Have you been to South America? You are badly uniformed in any case.

I know, I use to spend my winters in Mexico. As soon as you cross that border back up into the USA, all the shit starts back up again.

anyone knows what % of total UK population consists of native Brits?
in London i had an impression that the figure is below 20% !

british weather is one of the most horrible in the whole world, after Norway, ireland and Denmark.
I'd say Italy is a fantastic country to retire, however most brits are not welcome there due to their drinking habits and overall lack of style :D

retirement outside of Britain...
makes sense to me that if we could afford it, we would want to retire in the places that are the best vacation/travel destinations.
reasonably good and inexpensive health care, a plus.
as it would be a country/culture outside of Britain, should be a friendly and welcoming people.
depending on your tastes (or their malleability), if you are divorced, widowed or just ready to trade in your run-down jalopy that makes way too many disturbing noises, excellent place to find a new, uber easy-going model or if you are so inclined, a new model every other night (or hour)...
Thailand is where it's at with Bangkok consistently in the top ten of the major travel magazines world's best cities (Travel & Leisure and Conde Nast) and Chiang Mai, Phuket or Pattaya much more desirable to some.
compared with most of the destinations in the OP's list, there is so much more culinary diversity in Bangkok than those listed and with price tags that would make it easily affordable to actually eat out a few times per week at the local restaurant, be it Italian, French, Egyptian, Mexican, or Irish Pub on a social security check or the Brit equivalent or pension.
anyway, i could also vote for Bali, Argentina(Buenos Aires or Bariloche), Sydney or mellow Perth in Australia, maybe Chile but all these European countries, nice architecture but the cost just isn't worth it to me.

at anyrate, I like it right where I am, no desire to move anywhere, not even to another part of town, let alone another country, and if I die here that will be just fine with me, as a matter of fact, I hope I do

So why do billionaires move to Singapore, plenty of millionaires to Thailand, Croatia, Spain or Greece?
Unless your ONLY standard is "must have English as the official language", you're very wrong (and even then places like Singapore and Malta are equal or better).

Name one billionaire who left the US for good and moved.

Thailand? LMAO! Have you seen how hard it is to get citizenship in that country? Thousands in taxes. Married or related. Nobody but a few people a year move to Thailand from the US. You are so full of crap. Go back to whatever shit hole country you are trying to praise (unless you are already there).

People should move to USA, Brittan, EU (not shithole greece or bad cities) or possibly stick around Austrailia, parts of Russia, big Chinese cities, UAE or Turkey.
