I read the article, and I didn't see any mention of a securities transaction tax.
After six years and 11,411 replies, the talk continues. Maybe you folks aren't pounding on that panic button hard enough.
Maybe you have watched the news, but the Democrats re-introduced the financial transaction tax last week.

I read the marketwatch article some days ago. It describes an action plan (not a bill) by Rep. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland. I see no mention in either article of Obama's position on the idea. DeFazio has introduced a STT bill in every congress since the early 2000's. So far, DeFazio's bills have never been taken seriously.
I agree with clacy that noting significant will happen for at least two years. But keep pounding on that panic button just in case something develops.
I would be really surprised if he mentions the ftt in his state of the union. From what I have read he's going to push for a fee on banks with assets greater than $50B. AFAIK the Obama admin (as a whole) is still opposed to the ftt (including the current Treasury Secretary).
