Merkel SPD Rivals Vow Transaction Tax Push in a Grand Coalition
Delayed plans for a financial transaction tax in 11 European states would get a fresh push if Chancellor Angela Merkel enters a coalition with the Social Democrats after Sept. 22 German elections, top SPD members said.
The SPD will make the tax -- known as FTT -- a âhigh priorityâ if a so-called grand coalition emerges

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble has made clear that he still considers the introduction of a Financial Transactions Tax (FTT) to be possible at international level, despite potential legal hurdles.
Even if the European Council's legal service is right in deeming the current plans for a European FTT to be incompatible with European Union (EU) law, this non-binding opinion does not represent the fatal blow for the levy, Schäuble stressed, pointing out that it has always been known from the outset that introducing the tax within the framework of enhanced cooperation would not be achieved easily.
The European Commission has already rejected the legal opinion, highlighting the fact that the FTT has been subjected to a thorough legal analysis, and warning that EU member states should assess the document critically.
