1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Quote from Midas:

The pro tax crowd have had a long time to get their facts straight, and now it looks like the opponents are sharpening the argument against it. The low cost etf example was a good one.

Yeah Like the the etf and mutual fund example, it really brought home how this can affect mainstreet

Are all those in favor of the tax mentally retarded stuttering idiots that can't make any points?

Pelosi at least realized that the whole world would need to enact a tax or else or firms would abandon the US. That is actually quite an amazing realization for that useless POS. Why don't we just give the government all our money, better yet one world government. That way they could control everything and tell us what is right and wrong, because they are so good at it.
Tax everything. Personally I'd like to see my cable bill taxed alot more so I can't afford it anymore, because I watch way too much football and it causes me to ignore my family, sit around, use electricity, etc. Tax my cell phone away also because the 14% in taxes I pay on the POS isn't enough for me to trun it off yet, and it casues car accidents and is killing our children. Special tax on gaming systems because they are turning our kids into morons. Tax the hell out of politicians as they are the biggest waste of life out there. Campaign funds should be taxed at a 99% rate. Everytime they create a new agency they should be required to fund 90% of it out of their own budgets. Everytime they come up with a new tax for the rest of us it should be tripled to their own paychecks and everyone on their staffs. PAC's and Lobbyists should be required to pay a 90% tax on every dime they use to buy politicians to create b.s. legislation in their or their clients favor. Everyone in Congress who wants to build a monument to themselves in their home districts and states should be legally obligated to pay for it out of their own pockets, and never allow a tax payer dollar to be involved.
I could ramble on, but I need to trade to make money to pay for my kids school , save for retirement, buy food for my family, take care of our fixed rate, 25% down mortgage that we can actually afford, not one of those variable POS that particular members of Congress and Greenspan pushed as a great idea for people who can't afford a house.
Ok, done again. :D

looking at the video, I couldn't help but think of that old axiom in reference to the woman who was a former credit derivatives trader and now teaches economics:

"those that can do, and those that can't, teach"

Transaction Tax

Those who think that there is a little chance a financial transaction tax will ever pass should pay attention to Nancy Pelosi's recent comments. She describes the proposal as one of the many ideas under discussion. The Speaker said that while it is not YET a high priority the idea has substantial currency on our caucus. This idea is gaining support and I can see it becoming a reality sometime in the next year or so if we are not careful.

Given the current Wall Street-Main Street disconnect, an amateur politician could funnel the anger and resentment into popular support for this idea. I am with Rev on this one. The time to speak up is now, not later.

Tax

I absolutely agree with all that, which is why it isn't going to happen. I did hear one interesting variation, in which only transactions over 100k would be taxed. Now that was hilarious, considering that everything is subdivided into tiny units now, as a result of Reg NMS. Just shows the proposal is part of a left wing dreamland.

I think you only lose sleep at night if you believe we have a leftist administration, ready to promote this trash legislation. I don't. I think we have a generic, plain vanilla centrist administration, all dressed up in progressive clothes. At least we knew exactly what we got with Jimmy Carter.

The center is not holding. … It feels like carnival time, when up is down and down is up, when humble folks parade as kings and queens and the reigning royals are dressed as clowns. … The most startling evidence of reversal is Chris Dodd, chair of the Senate Banking Committee, who has been a loyal friend of Wall Street and especially Connecticut-based insurance companies. Dodd proposes to strip the Fed of its regulatory functions because of its “abysmal failure” to protect the public, and to replace it with an overarching regulatory administration. …
Taxing Wall Street is a more provocative departure, but some representatives are warming to the idea, drawn to Oregon Representative Peter DeFazio’s appealing Let Wall Street Pay for Wall Street’s Bailout Act. A very small excise tax on all financial transactions–trading stocks, bonds and derivatives–could yield hundreds of billions in revenue. House majority whip Jim Clyburn suggests the securities tax is “a painless way” to pay for highways.

Hopefully this doesn't come off the wrong way but there is A TON of garbage on ET due to there simply being a ton of idiots in the world but this thread has been so on top of this issue it's been really impressive. WSJ, DJ, European websites/papers keep re-hashing the same shit all the time while we're actually finding the fresh, NEW commentary on the subject so good on everyone here. Again though I'm just asking all of you to continue or start writing your congressman/senators and commenting on websites/blogs etc. It really has become part of my trading day to get out there and raise hell against this thing because it's simply part of my job now to ensure my job security by doing my part, I hope all of you do the same. Have a good weekend.
