1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

Quote from oldtime:

ok, I never took it that seriously, but when they started talking about it on tv I figured I better get up to speed so I can start arguing. I'll watch it again tonight on msnbc (it's ok to mention that network here on this thread isn't it?

Of course this is not a right wing thread. It is a thread for all political sides. The reason it is 1300 long is because, by and large, politics has been kept out (even if bashing FTT supporters is perfectly reasonable!)

Stok is entitled to express his political leanings, and it is true that the most ardent FTT supporters tend to be left wing radicals such as Paul Krugman. However I am sure there are democrat supporters that are fighting a FTT, one political opponent of FTT on our side is Tim Geithner. Obama's not getting much from heat from this thread because he's largely kept his mouth shut on this issue.

We should probably make more effort to keep it a politics free zone I suppose, this a P&R section for that.

Thanks for your input. I will make those changes.

Quote from andohmeeta:

That's a good letter. Words infer much to political advisors. Just about that final para "will". (Mostly the letter suggests ''The tax would").

I feel it's always better to write, "the tax WOULD" as opposed to "the tax WILL", because "WILL" definitely suggests the writer is thinking fait accompli.

You might also request a reply requesting the Senators' assurance that he/she are not in favor of the tax. (They usually will avoid expressing a fixed opinion unless they are specifically asked to do so).

An EU source told Reuters the United States now seemed "less problematic than the UK"

A source in an international development organization told Reuters the United States still opposed the idea in principle but would not block others from going ahead with new taxes.

What is this babble?? The states could never stop the EU anyway and the Uk remains opposed - so all remain opposed and there just using word play to make the situation sound as though progress has been made.

Quote from FightTheFuture:

"Germany was initially in favor of the tax idea but has turned lukewarm and is contemplating what the proceeds of such a tax should be used for."

-----------------------------
Where's that coming from?

That doesn't sound right. Perhaps the writer is referring to Germany being opposed to Barroso's EC plan because Germany wants to keep revenue for itself instead. However that has always been the case...

The FTT is a hot topic right now so the news services are trying to create as many stories around it as possible. They're repackaging the same content with a slightly different spin over and over again because it attracts viewers and sells advertising. They do that with everything.

Good lord, I guess this is what happens when you get Obama in a room with Sarkozy without Timmy G by his side:

Sarkozy Confers With Obama on Transaction Tax

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said that he and President Barack Obama shared a “common analysis’ on the financial transaction tax.

Speaking after bilateral talks today at a Group of 20 summit in Cannes, France, Sarkozy said that the summit needs to be ‘‘hand in glove with the U.S.’’

‘‘We need the leadership of Barack Obama,’’ Sarkozy said.
