1/4% Tax on all stock trades pushed in NY Times today

All I can say is 'Thank God' conservative Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper recently won another 4 year term. He has been our biggest, most vocal leader of any country that will not support a global FTT.
I don't think Lagarde getting the IMF spot will change the argument very much as for those countries who support and don't support the FTT. Of course, as head of the IMF she'll have new reports and analysis created by her socialist network showing how great a global FTT would be. But at the end of the day, those countries opposing it will remain firm on no FTT.

Lagarde is favourite for IMF job, but Tobin tax may be real winner

So if Lagarde becomes head of the IMF all these countries that have blatantly objected to the FTT are suddenly going to fall in love with it? LOL. I'm not buying that for one second. I think if she does get the nod to head up the IMF it really is going to be a non event when it comes to the FTT.

Also I don't think she's necessarily a shoo in for the job as France is investigating her role in some sort of kick back scandal and I believe is supposed to make some sort of ruling by June 5th.

The big Asian economies don't trust the IMF. It's totally irrelevant to them. Less vibrant economies ignore the rapidly booming IMF memberships at their peril.
As "manager" of an international organisation Lagarde would have to accept that influential FTT refusers meant it when they said NO, or pursue it and look like a disrespectful idiot.
Inquiries into an alleged indiscretion should be unequivocally settled in her favor before she achieved the position, or she should not be appointed.

French Ambassador likes FTT

But he added that the U.S. and France are not allied on all issues. He mentioned France’s opposition to the death penalty and its efforts to raise the contributions of all countries for development aid to 0.7 percent of gross domestic products.

Mr. Delattre also called for “creative ways” of raising funds for development aid, saying that he favored a financial transaction tax that would divert 5 cents for every transaction as a means of raising $30 billion annually to combat global poverty.

I have no problem giving 5 cents a trade for a good cause.

But "combating global povertry" is not on that list, unless and until anyone can figure out how tossing money at the problem is going to result in anything other than padding the Swiss accounts of despots.

Five cents will become 50 cents will become 5 dollars will become 50 dollars. Once they get started there will be no stopping it.
