Sainath, a longtime Indian journalist and the founder of People’s Archive of Rural India, or PARI, who describes why working-class Indians are standing up against “absolutely vicious” new rules that were rammed through Parliament, and the protests show no signs of stopping.
 
India is in fact another failed socialist state to add to the list. Its on the road towards a western-style society but just because people can vote does not make it comparable with the the US, the UK etc., its many years away from being a full democracy, if it ever reaches that point.

Is the strike going to matter that much at the moment with the Coronavirus lockdown measures or is it not in lockdown or restrictions in India at the moment? In any event this is not the best time to strike due to the problems with the virus. The police can just use virus control as an excuse to use extreme force to stop the protests.
 
Perfect example of a country full of people who just don't want to join modern ways of competitive commercial activity and progress. They sure love money, but just not at their own increased risk. I should correct myself, not all, emigration is at a record high, 1/4 of all Canadian immigrants hail from India. An entire nation should really not listen to its farmers. Same with Japan that is handcuffed by farmers and people above 65 years old. An entire young generation lost faith and hope and stopped having children. Maybe low birth rates are not an issue in India (yet) but they are in China and Japan among many other nations. It's when an entrenched group has a grip on an entire society and pushes through its demands without regard to anyone else.

Amusing how suddenly posters who have no knowledge of India, let alone having been there, are suddenly experts on the country and pass judgement as if India was still a colonial outpost. No 6 in the world for manufacturing output.

And how do you know those other posters have no knowledge of India? And what has manufacturing output to do with being or not being a developing country? You have read different things into the posts than the authors intended. But to address your point, it does not strike you as being odd that a nation of 86 million or even just 51 million outputs more than India with 1.3 billion? After all it was you who brought up this convoluted point. So, yes, things smell a bit backward and colonial when in 2020 a country still wages border skirmishes and is in the tight hands of a few super privileged and where still a huge male majority justifies gang rapes of innocent girls and fights most foreign companies and labels them a threat. Did I forget a cast system that still differentiates between those who have a chance at being doctors and lawyers and those who are relegated to the slums just because into which family they were born into. Add to that rampant corruption and you have the perfect definition of a backward nation that embraces outdated principles of life that privilege a few and burden a majority.

India's a complicated country, but punching way below their weight.

2nd in population, but only 6th by manufacturing output, 6th by GDP, 35th by power usage, 80th by freedom from corruption, 125th by life expectancy, 128th by adult literacy etc. etc.

Yet a respectable(?) 5th by military strength..................
