    Portfolio margin acting strange?

Hi folks. I lurk here from time to time. It's been a long journey but sometime ago I finally qualified for portfolio margin (PM). In fact I have been using it for a while now and quite like it, the only issue is I haven't experienced any major drawdown using PM so all was good when it was good...

    Trading bonds with Optionsxpress

I have an IB account, but I am an Australian client with corporate account. For whatever weird reason, I cannot trade bond using IB and I cannot even request the trading permission. Most major brokerages don't serve Australian clients these days, with OptionsXpress being an exception.

    Trading bonds with Optionsxpress

Anyone has experience trading bonds with Optionsxpress? Is bond marginable in Optionxpress like Interactive Brokers? Are certain bonds excluded from trading due to low credit rating? Many thanks!

    Bollinger band alert

Hey. I am looking for a free platform that allows an alert to be sent to my email when stock price touches the lower band. If such platform doesn't exist, how about an alert for price crossing below the SMA? I know Zignals has this free, but the stock quotes seem inaccurate. Thanks for sharing.

Should they just have printed debt free money?

There're always 2 sides to a coin. One of the 'big fish' they caught not long ago is a railroad minister who embezzled about $200 milion. No wonder he is always a yes man to any projects, since he always get to have a cut. Same thing happened in South East Asia, where most big projects are...

Should they just have printed debt free money?

Spot on with that. If China corners the commodities market, which I believe it is working on that, then yuan will be strong. True. China's economic pathway is different than US. I believe it is working towards a socialist utopia, but is finding it hard for the transition. It is making US a...

Should they just have printed debt free money?

Printing money for spending is moral hazard using the terms of economics. Actually this is what has already happened. America want to spend what it cannot afford, so it prints money by selling government bonds. China buys a lot of those bonds. Many American institutions buy those bonds too. In...

    Miner makes $200k per year

A few job postings really don't mean anything. The Australian experience is that I have heard a lot of folks talking about getting into mining due to the loaded salary as well as massive youth unemployment, but in reality I have yet to see anyone that has actually gotten in. I have seen some...

    Miner makes $200k per year

It's funny to see how people would react to this article with jealousy, anger, hopeful optimism and what not. As an Aussie, I can tell you this is a very misleading article, just like the many that have already been written out there. Mining only hires about 2% of total workforce in Aus...

    Blind faith in capitalism

Public lending is criteria based. If you fulfilled the criteria of sound business plan, then you will get funding. Lending is made at market rate, just like private lending, and is only applicable for certain entities/people. It is for the little guys who want to be entrepreneurial but do not...

    Blind faith in capitalism

Think clearly first before you try to be sarcastic. You forgot that the Fed is also part of government. All new capital originates there. Public lending does not make communism. That is because market demand set the cost of capital. Just because there is public lending doesn't mean lending will...

    Blind faith in capitalism

    1. That is because a good idea plus a reasonable good business model is more than enough. When you borrow money to launch your project, you are essentially spending it, and that money becomes the profits of other businesses and the wages of your staff. These other businesses and your staff get...

    Blind faith in capitalism

Precisely. As I have mentioned, crony capitalism always ensure the cronies have a favorable risk-reward proposition compared to everyone else. How can you not perform better than the others when your loan is cheaper? Well, that is at least true in a national level. Internationally, not so much...

    Blind faith in capitalism

Don't mislead others with things I didn't say. Fair access to capital does not mean everyone can get capital. Your second point is a flawed argument used by the current system that I have yet to explain more thoroughly. I have no qualms about capitalists lending their OWN capital subject to...

    Blind faith in capitalism

Let me repeat again, the above is real capitalism. The current 'trickle down' version is some kind of communism. Under the state controlled economy, capital will only be allocated once you got the top echelon's green light. Similarly, under the trickle down economy, capital will only be...

    Blind faith in capitalism

Just speaking out loud here. It occurs to me that many people are having a blind faith in capitalism. I'm not saying socialism or communism is good either. Capitalism, as the word itself elucidates, is really all about capital. Don't these blind worshippers of capitalism realize that most of...

    The weird economy of Australia

Hey fellow ET'ers. Something pop up in my mind today. I would like to see someone here showcasing your awesome understanding of economics. So Australia has a target cash rate of 4.5%, set by the Reserve Bank of Australia. That translates to a business lending rate of about 8%. When...

Buffett saw merits of Occupy Wall St

... before OWS even existed, and before the big crash from 2008. I chance upon this article written by Buffett himself in 2006. It details how wrong and un-capitalistic Wall St has become. http://money.cnn.com/2006/03/05/news/newsmakers/buffett_fortune/index.htm
