how do u determine if something is statistically significant?

How do you tell if the trades come from different samples? How can you tell that the different market you look at are independent? I think most markets aren't independent. Can you recommend some books on statistics? I think as long as I can't tell an edge from random I can't tell if I'm...

Saddam's capture will move the market, but I'm shorting

I think the effects on events like this one are overestimated. The effect on the markets will last a couple of hours or a day. Even after 9/11 it was difficult to tell which market movements were caused by the attacks and which ones would have happened anyway. The car bomb explosions in Irak...

    A question about CD-R

The burning software usually has a file manager build in so that you don't have to copy the files into one directory. You chose all the files and when your're finished you press "burn". Some Drives come with software that allow to use the CD as a floppy disk (e.g. HP). But the format isn't...

    Traders Cant Beat The Market

I do agree with him, too but the conclusion that one should invest in index funds (to ensure your pension) is wrong: The population of the industrialized part of the world is aging. If everybody buys stock to pay the pension to whom will he sell? Younger people who intend to do the same. What...

Have you tried changing the refresh rate? LCDs can't handle the high frequency that monitors can.

    Market breaking down??

Hi AAAintheBeltway, how can you tell that there is (no) distribution? I haven't even found a proper definition of it. Can you recommend a book on that? Thanks LS

    Fear of success

Hi Nihaba, I think it's a little bit too easy to blame it on the fear of success. In your examples I think it is the preassure of success. In the athlete example the athlete doesn't have pressure to succeed in training. If it goes wrong today there's another chance tomorrow. But in...

Decreasing interest rates, increasing unemployment and high bullish sentinment?

Because they aren't overpriced any more if earnings go up. But the high bullish sentiment scares me. And there are a couple of questions: How about the debt? Will it be paid off by an inflation and a falling dollar? What about the European economy if the Euro/$ is so high? I wonder how the...

    closing my trading account today

What do you want? Do you want to trade or do you want to have a house and a party every evening? You think you're fucking up because you don't get filthy rich in no time? Aren't you glad that you are back to reality? I now and then dream this dream of becoming rich quick, too. - sometimes...

    closing my trading account today

Sorry, aphexcoil, I can't disagree more: This would be the shortcut to hell. You can't lie. Your interviewer would find out pretty soon. If he/she doesn't find out then guess who your co-workers are. Do you want to work in such a company? If he/she finds out and hires you in spite of it then...

    Selling Naked

How about not going completely naked but also buying at the same time an option which is much further in the money? It costs a little bit performance but saves one from ruin. I must admit I didn't write an option yet, just thinking about it.

College Students and Other Future Traders

Hi RS, I fully agree with you in the rest of your statements but I don't think it's a wise idea to publish one's system. If everybody would trade the same system it won't work anymore. On the other hand it isn't a good idea to ask for a system because you really believe in it only if you...

    Cumpulsive Trading

I had to do this when I wanted to trade QQQ with less than 25K. I noticed that I started to "save" trades i.e. push the SL a little bit away so it doesn't get hit (and it worked unfortunately) or I didn't get out of a trade when I saw that the trend was over. (My problem is not to cut my winners...

meditation as a way to calm trading angsts

That's how 'proof' photos are made. In self-hypnosis you can come to a state where you don't feel your body anymore or it feels very light. But gravity will make sure that you don't fly away. So I think you don't have to take "levitation" literally.

meditation as a way to calm trading angsts

Bending spoons isn't bs. I did that. But I prefer spoons which keep their shape when I use them to eat ice cream. It's the same with levitation: As long as you don't expect it to last much longer than a second almost everyone can do that.

meditation as a way to calm trading angsts

Is there "hard science" and "soft science"? Karl Popper said if a theory can't be falsified it isn't science (roughly spoken). The only proof is a failed falsification. A theory is just a theory until it is proven. Einstein didn't get his Nobel prize for the relativity theory. Physics...

Feeding the slot machine all day

And I have learned that many things I was taught are wrong. :p You earn respect (or you demand respect) if you work long hours. But for most headworkers this is not true, the efficiency is only there for a couple of hours. And even the work of craftsmen deteriorates if they work too long hours...
