Can one choose to not settle an ITM option at expiry?

Ah ok that helps. I thought that auto-close meant auto-settle in ca$h. They actually deliver the shares. It's not like oil or gold; no, they will not drive up to your house with an armored truck with bullion or tanker with oil. I'm still not sure if I can let an ITM option expire--with neither...

UK Phone Masts Are Being Set On Fire Over ‘Dangerous’ 5G Coronavirus Conspiracies

Ah! So 5g causes CV... it all makes sense now. --- Bogus conspiracy theories linking the global COVID-19 outbreak to the rollout of 5G has lead to phone masts in the UK being set alight. The BBC reports that cellular towers in Birmingham, Liverpool and Melling in Merseyside were set alight...

Can one choose to not settle an ITM option at expiry?

Right; this is the "Rational" decision--and what I have always done--bank the profit. Briefly, this question is really more about the notion of a rational market. In today's CV market, with businesses shut down everywhere, a rational market would be in freefall, as cash flows dry up, right...

Can one choose to not settle an ITM option at expiry?

The rational decision for an ITM contract at expiry is to bank the profit. That is why brokers auto-execute and deposit. The question has nothing to do with marginal tax rates or coronavirus. It's whether I have choice about auto close and deposit.

Can one choose to not settle an ITM option at expiry?

This is not a tax question... that was just an illustrative example. It is a question about options: can auto execution and deposit be prevented?

Can one choose to not settle an ITM option at expiry?

Yes... but that's not the point. It's an illustrative example. This is the point. Can auto-execution be prevented?

Can one choose to not settle an ITM option at expiry?

Is it possible to NOT exercise an in-the-money option at expiry? Why? this is an IRRATIONAL decision, right? Well for two reasons: 1. In some situations, it makes sense; for example, say, I bought an INTC call at USD50.00 that expire on April 17th. The price has gone up to USD$55, and I thus...

    VIX below 50 today...

We will all be judged for years to come on how we trade during this event. This market is presenting some extraordinary opportunity. I'm throwing the kitchen sink at this market--anything I can think of to drain cash out. The trip back to our "new normal" will be just as volatile--assuming, of...
