thinking about this it is getting more interesting...if strength in a range is to be faded...what about strength breaking out of a range? And just what is a range: any where the market has visited more than once; like a pullback

that is absolutely true but what makes your comment very interesting is that your trading strategy is totally dependent on what your perception of market : range or trend. That range is usually a flag .....

The basic question in trading is who is stronger. if you look at the swing marked with the yellow trend line and yellow arrow , that is not so strong as the bar marked with the yellow arrow. But that bar marked with a yellow arrow is a bear flag as is the last three bars

Markets are supposed to trend or range but there appears to be something that is neither or it could even be said, that is both at the same time: a ranging trend.see yellow box. This is often a very tight range with a direction bias and can be very confusing if reversal trades are taken...
