When will IV peak before earnings?

You're confusing issues. Theta is time decay and has nothing to do with IV peak and collapse. If your only concern is maximum amount of premium from IV peak/collapse and no concern for underlying movement, most of the time, the near month will inllate the most and collapse the most (later...

It's semantics. IV is 50 or you can say it's 50%

Best place to trade small options account

Your volume and frequency will determine what broker has the best rates for you. I would never utilize a commission per trade schedule since I scale in and out of positions. If you trade clean and don't need any hand holding, look at IB. Assuming it hasn't changed, there's a $10 per month...

    IB Customers - Any Tips?

If their policy is still the same, you get more with a larger account and higher activity. Until earlier this year, you could get double by having a demo accouint open at the same time. And I don't think that the 100 per page gets you unlimited quotes. Short answer? There is none.

longed a stock for the dividend, want to benefit from price movement

Here's what they're giving away. As mentioned previously, with the dividend they're paying you with your own money. And to add insult to injury, now you have a taxable event and you'll have to pay taxes on your own money! What a deal! As you guessed, you could collar the position to lock...

What are some good educational resources for a beginner?

The problem with covered calls is the poor R/R ratio. Eat peanuts, shit like an elephant :) If one is a buy and hold type who rides it out come hell or high water, CC's are acceptable for add'l yield. But for a learning experience, tho a bit more complex, IMO, spreads are a better starting...

What are some good educational resources for a beginner?

No, I use the equities. Options would be great for pairs trading if you had a knack for identifying moves large enough to overcome the slippage and decay. I don't. Shorter term options would be better if your timing is good. More bang for the buck.

longed a stock for the dividend, want to benefit from price movement

Other than market movement, what other risk is there in stock ownership ??? Dividends are merely payments to yourself with your own money. No free lunch.

option expiration and after hours pricing

If I understand your position correctly, you had a diagonal call spread on GLD. I don't mean to beat up on you but if so, why in the world you be trying to close the long leg 3 minutes before the pinned short call's expiration? With 3 minutes to go, you should be placing a market order to...

option expiration and after hours pricing

Anyone can make a prediction but that's totally worthless. What the OP needs is info on how to deal with the problem as well as a plan for what to do if assigned on his short calls as well as what to do if GLD is rising early Monday morning. A recipe for disaster is mere hope as well as being...

    Hedge Losing Stock Position

Other than getting out, buying puts is the only way to hedge against a 25-50% drop. If willing to limit the upside, you could collar the position to reduce the cost of the puts but that's not too good of an idea if you're already down 50%

option expiration and after hours pricing

First off, with GLD under 179 Friday AM, why didn't you close (or at least roll) this position?? The last nickel can often run you over like a Mack truck. Hopefully you get your statement by Sunday night so you'll know if assigned. If so, I' d be on the phone with them as soon as they open...

tell me why this isn't easy arbitrage...

It's very are to find a magical risk-free money-making position. In a fast market you might see a price out of kilter but by the time you assess it, its usually gone. Even if you could react that fast, you wouldn't get much size and more likely, you end up with some legs but not all. More...

What are some good educational resources for a beginner?

Everyone has different experiences with what works and what fails so opinions as to what's best will very (strategy, vehicle traded, etc.). Options provide options :). You can go for big time leverage, scalp volatility, chase small safe positions (spreads), acquire stock at better prices...

    Question about Straddles

There's no one size fits all answer since there are multiple variables at play. With modest price movement and passage of time, a strangle can lose more $$ than a straddle.
