covered call profit and loss question

It's both. If you buy (or sell) an existing option from/to someone else, open interest doesn't change (buy to open + sell to close... or vice versa). If both parties are opening their position, an option is created and open interest goes up +1 And if both parties are closing, poof...

    IB Margin Problem

Rolling the so called unused 20 Oct calls to Nov probably would have solved the problem but you shouldn't have to do that if your long and short calls per month pair up evenly. Can you elaborate on why IB's software did this? What were the details of IB's explanation? Why isn't it a...

covered call profit and loss question

See the OCC Option pamplet on page 12, paragraph three: Woulda-coulda-shoulda :) Trying to eke out the last nickel or save some slippage or commissions often comes back to bite you. If the UL rallies and you make a large percentage of the potential profit weeks or even a month before...

covered call profit and loss question

The broker cannot exercise your position anytime he wants. Assignments and exercise come from the OCC and are done on a random basis. The broker decides how customers will be chosen and that process is supposed to be in the Options Agreement.

covered call profit and loss question

If money isn't credited to my account when I sell something, how come they take money out when I buy something ??? . :D :p Whenever you sell something, the proceed are credited to your account. Doesn't matter whether it's an option or a stock, etc. Conversely, whenever you buy...

covered call profit and loss question

see ASE1245's post here: http://www.elitetrader.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=228586 I once had some naked ITM MSO calls with 2 pts of time premium exercised. Immediately covered the stock and resold the calls. That's a rare event but even that can happen. Good outcome if the UL...

covered call profit and loss question

Yes, you have the profit numbers right IF SSO is at 43 or higher at expiration. The problem is that you're getting hung up on the brokerage statement. Right now you have a $570 gain on the stock and a $70 loss on the option. You're ahead by $500. If SSO is 43 at expiration, you will get...

    How to manage this beast?

I'm sorry, your two posts today have exceeded your annual average post limit. Please come back next year :) If you have a position that is large enough to trouble you and appear to be a beast, cutting your losses is usually the best thing to do. Panicking and adding additional layers of...

covered call profit and loss question

You're a bit confused. Let's see if I can make it worse :) You buy a stock and sell a covered call. The stock rises and so does the call, albeit at a slower pace. So for example, the stock has risen 2 points while the call has risen 75 cts. The stock is a long position and the call is a...

    Chasing unicorns?

OK, still mulling some possibilities - been thinking about this in terms of the OIH which only has 13 components and plenty of volatility lately. A few questions... Vis a vis "buy vol on that subset", by that I take it you mean the potential movement of the active UL's rather than the...

    Newbie: what is this called?

I'd read anything that you can get your hands (or mouse) on and learn as much as you can about what interests you.

That's true but it doesn't have much to do with the OP's question.

How to calculate expected move based on Implied Vol?

I think that optionmonster's formula is simply calculating the amount of move (percent) needed to break even at expiration. I would surmise that the expected move is something along the lines of: IV x Sq Root of time until exp x Price

Anyone know of a web site that has somewhat timely info on trading halts? I had one but it's now a dead link. TIA

Nah, I think you should take care of it with one of your other Elite Trader handles

    Account Destruction.

I don't get it either. In a fair priced market, the credit from one spread equals the risk from the other and vice versa. If IV changes and the price of each leg changes, this relationship still holds (put call parity). IOW, a $2.60 call debit spread has the same R/R of the equivalent...
