If VIX is a measure of implied volatility in S&P options...

Any trader with half-a-brain understands the best and easiest trade would be to "buy the VIX when it's cheap, then sell when it spikes". Problem... you can't simply buy the VIX. You have to buy some other "VIX-based derivative"... all of which are subject to time decay.

Kathy Griffin complains she's unemployable after being 'blacklisted' from Hollywood for Trump photo

She apparently thought she could "raise her personal stock" in Hollywood with an outrageous statement. Turns out, she was wrong. (When there is "Free Speech", one is free to hose himself bigly by flapping his big mouth.... as in this case.)

Betting against ETers - best long term strategy?

Doubt there is a way to collectively play ET'ers sentiment... too diverse. However, the website Traders-Talk.com has some votes tallied by the moderator. Seems sometimes it's good to go with the majority vote, sometimes better to fade them.

    wash sale on ETFs question

Even with your premise... the Wash Sale doesn't "save you taxes"... it costs you taxes this year by disallowing the deduction for the loss. Then next year, saves you the amount in taxes it cost you last year by adding last year's disallowed loss to the cost basis of your regained position in...

    wash sale on ETFs question

For the life of me, I've never been able to understand the "financial value" to the Wash Sale Rules. Sure, it keeps traders from generating an "artificial tax loss"... for THIS YEAR.... but by allowing the loss to be added to the cost basis of his next purchase, he's gets to "recover the loss...

Seeking Advice to Configure Lenovo P-920

In the T5810, you'll want to go with the E5-1620*. It's 4-core, dual thread. The E5-1603/1607 are 4 core but not dual threaded.... and run on slower RAM. The 1620 costs more but benches ~90% higher than the 1603. However, if you're buying from Outlet, you can watch to see when a 1620 unit is...

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

I get that. But "segregated funds" were only "sort-of-segregated". Customer funds couldn't be used by the firm to pay their expenses, but were allowed to be "invested" with the earnings accruing to the broker. One way around that was for customers to have their cash balances invested in...

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

They always "used to" when they could get away with it. Any interest earned would accrue to the broker instead of the customer. Over time brokers got more and more aggressive... sometimes "making bets" on rates and getting hosed on the result. IOW... The broker uses YOUR funds to take risks...

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

I may not be up to speed on this... but the FCM has SIPC insurance? Doesn't their risk disclosure specifically state they do NOT have federal agency insurance??

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

I don't know the details and specifics of Robinhood. But I've been "involved" with brokers who got into trouble with customer funds. All I'm saying is "buyer beware". When I established an account with Crossland years ago, I asked them about what they do with customer funds?. They said, "We...

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

Personally I wouldn't be comfortable with that notion. Several high-profile brokers have gotten into trouble trying to "make the float" on customer funds. Maybe innocuous at first... maybe more aggressive later. As a customer, you should know all about this. May not be in your best interest...

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

Not the same, I think. Brokers have to make money somehow... fees of some sort, commissions, spreads, markups, kickbacks, etc. As a customer you should know how they make their money and determine whether it's reasonable and acceptable to you. You ain't gettin' nothing that's completely...

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

Right. You've got to make money somehow to stay in business.

what do discount brokerage firms think about Robinhood?

How does Robinhood make their money? Most non-commission brokers make theirs on a "wider than market" spread.

Holding a mortgage note. Pros and Cons

That's the biggest overriding financial issue. I have a close friend family that owned a bowling alley. Had an offer to buy it for $2.8MM. Wanted to pay $2.3MM down, and have the owner carry the $500K balance. Wife objected. I adviser her that in the event of default, they'd get the...

Henry Rollins: The One Decision that Changed My Life Forever

A lesson for millennials who sulk in their parents' basement playing video games day and night... moaning, "Woe is me. Life isn't fair". I can identify a bit with Rollins. My first job out of high school was as a janitor, swabbing toilets for minimum wage.... all along thinking, "I want more...
